Notice how I wasn't posting for a while? Notice how I've been mentioning that I have a g/f now? Nope. I was working on the turbo.
It's all done now. I'm at 8psi like RiceBurnerEX (spelling?) and I'm roasting the tires like crazy. Acceleration is unbelievable! Everything is just the way I wanted it.
Here's a quick list of the materials...
- T3 Super 60 turbo. (Ebay)
- Nice vertical flow intercooler with top and bottom end tanks. (Ebay)
- Greddy E-Manage FMU. (/w PC Link and MAP sensor and ignition harness)
- 450cc RC Injectors.
- Missing Link Valve. (modified)
- Custom Turbo Manifold
- ACT Clutch (holds 275hp)
- ACT Flywheel
- Aluminum charge piping. (mandrel bent, connected with silicon clamps)
- K&N air filter. (conical, their best one, big sucker too)
- Custom exhaust system. (titanium muffler (not the expensive one), 2.5" piping)
- Greddy Type-S blow off valve.
- Autometer triple guage pod and CF series guages (boost, A/F, and oil temp)
- Denso Iridium Spark Plugs (IK22)
- Stainless high-flow cat from J's Racing
There's all sorts of little trick things such as... Oil cooler and remote oil filter. Boost controller and boost creep inhibitor (basically a one way valve and a relief valve /w guages too!). Turbo is oil AND water cooled for longevity. BOV vent tube is routed back into the intake for less noise and to pre-spool the turbo a bit. The exhaust is not loud, but sharp and raspy (it's the titanium and the turbo!). Internal wastegate, but the vent tube is modified to be much lower than stock.
Programming the Greddy E-Manage was a bitch. I thought that I would destroy my car when I first started it up, but everything seemed to work nicely. I ran it rich at first so that I wouldn't run lean. Then I tuned in the whole thing using a wide-band A/F meter I borrowed from a shop for $50 a day. I had it for two days. Oh well, it was worth it. I now have an optimum A/F ratio throughout all rpm's at 8psi.
The turbo is a bigger one, but I guess I made everything as smooth as possible because it spools up at around 2,800rpm. Then the power just climbs and climbs. I can roast the tires in 2nd when I dump the clutch at 3,500rpm.
Yeah, k3wl.
This one place where I always accelerate is this little on-ramp that's nice and long and straight. I used to have an exit speed of 60mph on that one, but now I have an exit speed of 100mph. It's a world of difference.
I haven't done any stupid things like I did with the stock setup yet. No power shifting, no 6,800rpm shifts. I shift at about 6,000rpm's now just to keep it sane.
Yeah, one word. Insane! Turbo your car now! I didn't even have the money for it. I just maxed out my credit card. Whoops! It cost me exactly $2,158 for the parts. Another $100 for borrowing that A/F meter. Another $160 for borrowing a MIG welder. So I guess that's $2,418. Not bad. That's basically how much I wanted to spend.
Pics coming very soon! I have documented the whole damned thing. Took me the longest time to make the manifold. That sucker took a lot of time and planning to make. The Missing Link Valve gave me some problems, but I finally made it seal properly. The exhaust system was a cinch. I had bought all of the parts and i borrowed a welder for one day. I then melted all of the parts together. Easy.

Yep, the turbo manifold took care of all of my space issues. That's one of the trick things too. The tubes go up and then down and the turbo kinda sits close to the block. It has more than enough room. Plus I made a heat shield to protect the fans and other heat sensitive things down there.

I might be doing a dyno. Don't know where to find a dyno shop around here yet? I might just take it to the track though.
I wanted the whole setup to not be that obnoxious, that's why I chose to route the BOV vent back into the intake manifold. Well, plus it improves performance a bit. Plus some people say it affects the MAP sensor. Don't know about that one, but I could disconnect it and see if my A/R ratio is different. I like it though; I can still hear it, it's just that it's muffled. Sleeper!

Congrats Grey ... now let me drive down to Shrewsbury, so u can make me one ... !!
Did u every consider making a custom manifold for our D17... with all the labor and materials ... how much would u charge for it ? .. i'm ready for the boost now .. !

One pipe is smaller and leads into a larger one. The exhaust gases don't go back into the combustion chamber during the valve overlap. It was either that or a turbo cam and sucky low rpm performance. I chose something in betwean. I will not sell this manifold. Too long to make and people wouldn't pay me as much as I would like for it. Only big shops with many customers should be mass producing these things. Thread Starter

So wait wait you bent your own intercooler piping? would you like to duplicate the prcess for a fee? i plan to do my own turbo project this summer using the same basics as riceburnerEX Revhard manifold, T3/T4 turbo. Only thing i really don't have a clue on where to get is the intercooler piping. So would you feel like making me some if you did make yours?? it would be highly appreciated
Thanks.
Thanks.

I wish I could bend my own. Then I would have a less restrictive system will a smaller drop in pressure. Alas, I don't have that sort of equipment. My method also required a fair amount of silicon clamps. Oh well. Got them off of Ebay for a good price. They work great too. They're the kind with the bolt stainless clamps instead of the screw type. Those are rated at some ridiculous psi (30+), so I should have no problem with air leaks when I crank up the boost. Which I will when I modify the internals.
