Yikes--RUST? On my 1.5 year old Civic?

I hadn't washed my car for a few weeks (maybe even a month), and it was dirty as hell (road dirt, snow, salt, etc)..
So when I did wash it, I noticed quite a few small rust spots developing on top of the little chips and nicks in the paint (especially on the front of my car, some on the side, etc)..

I looked through the warranty and they supposedly don't cover any rust caused by rock (paint) damage and stuff like that.
My car is only one and a half years old, and I can't believe its already starting to rust. I never thought this would happen! Now I know that its a must to wash my car at least bi-monthly..but first I have to take care of this rust.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there any chance my dealer would take care of it for free?

What should I do to get rid of the current rust, and prevent it from developing again?

man i hear you loud and clear. i'm in niagara falls and i have the same thing happening to my car. i went to handa and bitched ta them. man i had cars that were 5/6 years old and never had anything like that happen. mines not even a year old yet and i've got the same thing happening. the honda warranty says the following.

"deterioration due to normal wear or exposure"
"damage to paint, glass, and other exterior items due to raod hazards"

after they they showed me this i told them to suck my and bite it. i took my business to another honda dealer and they were happy to see me, they told me to came there for anything i need at all for waranty.

If the paint is chipped then the metal underneth the paint is exposed to road salt, dirt, water , etc. This is going to happen to any car of any make (unless its made out of stainless steel). The best way to combat this problem is to have some touch up paint from Honda and touch up any chips ASAP. I think this problem is covered in the owners manual, but I could be wrong, but I know I read it somewhere. I agree that the paint Honda is using has its issues, but normal road chips are just part of life, thats why I have touch up paint in my garage. Once a month I go around the car looking for chips and touch them up.

You can buy the paint at the Dealer for $10 (rip off) or at HandA.com for about $4 the last I checked.

I doubt if your dealer would take care of that for you. Rock chips are very prone to rusting, especially in places that use lotsa salt. Canadian winters suck **** ... cars really suffer up in Canada. I would say in terms of wear and tear, 1 season of winter is equivalent to 5 years of regular driving in a place that has no winter.

My car had one winter in Ottawa before I left for Cali, and even that was one winter too many.

It won't hurt to check with your dealer to see if they will fix it. No matter what they do you need to get some touchup paint.

Is there a special way to get rid of the rust before I put the paint on?

Also--is anyone aware of a site where I can get cheap touch-up paint, that ships to Canada (because most accessory sites I've been to don't)?

that really sucks!!! I've got chips and a few dings but you've got me paranoid now. I guess I'd better put that touch up paint to use and not just let it sit in the garage

i dont know about it being 5 years...
it sounds to exagerated... maybe one or two yeah if you dont care for your car. if you keep your car garaged and washed properly weekly that will make a huge difference.

my mom had a protege... she never cared about maintaining the paint. the car never was waxed and she never had one area of rust. trust me, i live in chicago, i know bad weather.

Ok, I should say 6 months of "Canadian" winter. I don't know about Chicago, but they use a sh*tload of salt up in Canada. And I'm not just talking about the body. All those cold morning starts in -15 degrees F temperatures aren't that great for your engine and transmission. And also, washing your car in that kinda temperature is not recommended; and some people don't have garages.

And I can't believe the number of old cars I see here in Southern Cali... cars that would have died long ago up north. They seem to last forever down here.
