Rep Power: 0 Extended Warranty Question
Hi - I'm new to the site and I posted this question on the new member/introduction board, but I thought I'd post it here too since it looks like there's more activity here:
I just bought a used 2002 Civic EX. The car has about 77,000 miles on it. I can buy a 3 yr/36K warranty on it for $1,800. Should I buy it?

Rep Power: 264 what does the warranty cover? what do you plan on doing with the car? what is your personality? Are you good with tools? You can buy a whole engine and tranny with 20k miles on e-bay for less than that.

Rep Power: 0 I'm no good with tools. If/when something happens to the car, I'm taking it to the shop. Even if there was a deal to be had on eBay, I wouldn't be able to do anything with the parts when I have them.
I'll be using the car for commuting to work (6 miles each way) and to drive 7 hours every other weekend (or so) to visit my girlfriend.
The warranty is through Carmax. I don't have the details in front of me, but it seemed pretty inclusive when I scanned through it.

Rep Power: 264 If you dont buy it your car will be a p.o.s. If you buy it your car will run 200k miles with no problems. Read the whole thing and make sure it fits in to what you will need. Make sure it doesnt say anything about mandatory car max oil changes or check ups to maintain the warranty. Not that thats a bad thing its just you dont want to find out after you void your warranty. 50-75 dollars a month for piece of mind doesnt sound that bad.

Rep Power: 0 Thanks -- that's kind of what I was thinking. The peace of mind will be worth a lot, especially if the coverage is good.
But I think you hit it exactly -- if I don't buy it, the car will be a p.o.s. Once I have it, the car will probably run forever.
I guess that means the warranty is worth it. It's probably cheaper in the long run.
