Trade for a Bimmer?
I have an opportunity to buy a used Bimmer. It's a white 2001 325i sedan with 75xxx miles on it, but it's in immaculate condition. I've known the owner since before she had the car, she is my neighbor and I know that she takes incredible care of it. All maintenance has been done by a local BMW specialist shop and she has all the documentation.
My car is a white 2002 Civic coupe with about 36xxx miles on it.
With what I'd be getting for my Civic, it would basically cost me >$4,000 to buy the Bimmer, but I keep going back and forth on whether I should.
Any opinions?

if it is in a immaculate condition go for it
I'd rather drive a bimmer over my vic any day
plus 75xxx miles isn't bad at all that's about as much as I drove my 4cylinder civic.

but labor is usually well over $100 if something goes wrong.
lube everything and oil change has been known to go over $600.

Sorry to disappoint most of you, but I told the lady I was sorry that I'm not going to be buying her car.
I know it's in perfect condition and I may not get an opportunity like this again any time soon, but right now, my Civic is running strong with less than half the miles and it's paid off. I just couldn't justify taking on a car payment at 20 while I'm not working that much. Plus, it would cost me more than $4,000 when it was all said and done.
So if any of you are in the midwest and are interested in the car, let me know, because this thing is a steal - she's asking $16,500.

yeah honestly debt is what makes you a slave. Plus the cost of parts and maintaining a bimmer is like four to ten times as much. My housemate was going to spend $2600 on his big brake kit and spend like $4000 on his rims for his bimmer. I was like holy crap that over 1/3 the value of my car. Plus the gas is expensive as hell now. I wouldn't recommended to a person who doesn't have a professional job.

I could've bought the car and made the payments, but I wouldn't have the money to continue living as comfortably as I am living now. I don't want to have to think twice before taking a girl out to dinner or buying some protein powder or a CD. If I got the Bimmer most of those luxuries would be gone.
Gas isn't really an issue for me because I put very few miles on my car right now (2-3K per year) since I'm in school, but the car still was high mileage.
You've got a great point about the job though - I'm just going to stick it out with my Civic until I graduate and have a real job (smiling at people in a Hollister t-shirt doesn't exactly make for huge paychecks) and then I'll go get my white Bimmer
are you people fvckin retarded????? who ever said to buy the bimmer should never ever go car shopping alone.... bring your parents. I would own a Ford rather then an out of warrenty BMW cuz when the Ford breaks down its cheap to fix it.
the funniest post in this thread is the dude who said you're getting a BMW for only 4000 bucks..... i seriously hope that was a joke.
if i had an 02 civic with with less then 40k miles i wouldnt even trade straight up for an 01 BMW with 75k miles..... hell, if i was offered 4000 dollars with the BMW i still would keep the Civic.
the replies in this thread show me why its so easy for car dealerships to rip people off.
white2k2.... that was the best thing you could of done is to turn that bmw down, you would regret it later on.

Hi,
BMW is exactly the type of the car that would only be useful to show your wealth and status. The actual ride feeling might just be like an high end Accord.
My believe is that, there is no use to get an BMW if the car is not extremely cheap for you to maintain (relatively). That is, your wealth does not reach that point yet. Those who might fit a BMW are those who can very easily afford its price, maintainance etc. Ride feel might come second for them. That where their status come from; people know they can easily afford to buy and maintain.
It is no use to fake to be whatever you are not, because bottom line is that you know you are not that level and you are not having that status yet. And your close relatives, friends also know.

1. Look up the difference in KBB price of your car and her car. See if $4000 is teh difference between them. If so, go to step 2:
2. Decide how long you want to keep the car, when you want to sell it, how long it will be worth what it is, and what you can afford in terms of fixes. This will let you see what you can afford and if you WANT to afford. If the cars is worth lets say $19,000 with that mileage and will be worth $14,000 in 2 years, + about $1500 a year of maintenance (due to out of warranty) = $3000 maintenance + $5,000 loss = $8000 loss. Now if hte civic is worth today $15,000 and will cost $100 a year to maintaine and will be worth $12,000 in 2 years then you have a loss of $3000 + $200 = $3200.
So in the end your total opportunity cost of owning the BMW over the 2 year period is $8000-$3200 = $4800. Now if thats fine with you, go for it. This is a figure that does not include non-measurable cost of liquidy of the vehicles ie. how fast and how easily you can sell each one.
Good luck. Just put it in numbers and you dont even have to think hard. Its just plain simple.
Eddie
Wow, there are a lot of ignorant posts in this thread. Bottom line is, if you dont have money dont get the bimmer. Parts are more expensive and it eats up more gas. You've got to pay to play. On that note, the 325 is much more superior than any civics or accords, stock for stock. Whoever said oil changes cost $600 is smoking some good crack. The 325 do require 7qts of oil and fully synthetic is recommended every 5k miles not 15k. My em2 is my econobox that I take everyday to work. It saves me gas and gets the job done. My bmw on the other hand handles like its on rails and have about 100 more hp.
To the thread starter, I think you've made a wise choice in keeping your civic. Finish school, make some money and get that bimmer.

I DID NOT say an oil change cost $600. I'm saying an oil change AND lube and I forgot to add the "visual inspection" did. Get your facts straight before shooting your mouth all over the place trying to put everyone else down. That's emenentary school crap. If you are here then you are obviously older, so act that way.
Don't call other people ignorant in your ignorance.

I did my share of research before even considering the financial aspect of the car and I knew what was bs about maintenance and such.
I've driven only two Bimmers - a 1996 328i and 2001 325i. Both handled awesome though the 2001 had a smoother transmission (but the 1996 had definately been abused a bit.)
So with me being only halfway through undergrad and then having graduate/law school for a while after that, I really don't need to be accumulating unnecessary debt right now.
Hope you have fun with your Bimmer though! I'll join the club in a few years
