springs control ride height, shocks just control spring oscillation after a bump in the road so that your car can maintain stability and not bounce off the street. oh and contrary to belief lowering your car does NOT blow your shocks nor does it wear them out quicker.
oh and im really not trying to be a d!ck here just letting people know. on suspensions such as ours (macpherson strut) the shock acts as a upper control arm and is in this sense a piece of the suspension assembly and since it does act as a suspension component and it has the spring mounted directly onto it nothing else it is referred to as a strut it is not actually a shock.
