Yup. final drive gear. it's a 4.57 gear and pinion from richmond gears. I also have the comptech reinforced differential, and the little yellow box is to fix my speedo since it will be off due to the gears. These 4.57 gears are made specifically for the S2000 and are capable of withstanding HIGH amounts of horsepower and are much stronger than the stock gears as well. Also, with the primary reduction factored in, my actual final drive ratio will effectively be a whopping 5.30!!!!!
this is not really a DIY. you gotta know what you're doing to do this install. i'm having it done by a friend of mine who's a honda tech (yes, a smart and knowledgeable one, not some pimple faced 18 year old from shop class). He also happens to own an S2000 as well.
To give you an idea, a stock S2000 with just these gears can run against a comptech SC'd S2k (5.5 psi) and be almost dead even. So far one guy ran a 13.1 with just these gears and an intake.
After this is done, I will get the ACT HD pressure plate for my clutch system. After that my car will be ready for the comptech supercharger, and be able to take the extra HP when I launch.
I'm building up my power train/clutch/rear end/etc BEFORE doing FI, since that only makes sense to prep the car for the SC.

lol it's actually not too bad. 1st gear stock goes to 43mph. with the 4.57's it goes to 38mph.
4th gear stock tops out at 118mph.
4th gear with the 4.57's tops out at 106mph.
Should be fun.
I've read nothing but good things about the 4.57 gears.
Oh, and the gears were $600.

however, there are a fair amount with gears that also have FI. many with the SC get 4.57 gears on top of that. which is what i plan on doing.

Does this mod work for any car? Not like a civic, but any sportscar? and What do the numbers mean? I understand the concept.. faster gears = more acceleration, lower top speed (i learned that from tokyo street racer 2)

the bigger the number is, the SHORTER the gearing is. that means more acceleration, but yes less top end. but how often am I going to go 160mph anyways?
so for example.
stock S2k gearing with torque at peak torque (135 at the wheels). 1st gear ratio 3.133. final drive 4.10. primary reduction 1.16.
so 135lb/ft * 3.133 * 1.16 * 4.10 = 2011 lb/ft force
with my new gears.
135lb/ft * 3.133 * 1.16 * 4.57 = 2242 lb/ft force
So shorter gearing multiplies torque more, making the car accelerate faster.
And yes you can get a shorter final drive gear for FWD cars. in fact i know the integra and 6th gen civics had gears available.
