Started my vinyl graphics!

This is the illustration I created to put on the hood of my car. It's an extreme close up of Godzilla. I'm having it printed on a reflective vinyl. The same stuff used for most street signs. Hopefully, by the fall I'll be able to get the graphics I created for the sides done.

It's only gonna cost me about $240 for the printing. Now, if I decide to have a professional applicator apply it.... $250 an hour! Luckily, I know a little bit on how to apply vinyl myself.

'Bout the only thing I can get you free are some extra Godzilla logos I had made that I probably won't use.

I've been in the graphics and sign business for almost 6 years and $250 is un-heard of......my private installers charge 20-40$ and hour and our shop and most shops in north america won't charge more than $85 per hour.

One other thing to note, printing on reflective is not that great an effect, the material losses most of its properties once covered up with solvent based ink.
Also reflective wont show your design shining back it will be just a big shiny hood.

The other factor is reflective is thicker and not a great vinly to "wrap" with.

I know $250 is outrageous. The place that is doing the printing referred me to a place. I opted out of it. Another thing is I live out of state of where it's being printed and the applicators.

I know about the inks hiding most of the reflective material. That's the effect that I am looking for. I've worked with it before. There's going to be total coverage of a "rich black". Since there is very little white areas only the light colors and highlights should glow in light.

I'm not planning on doing a total wrap with reflective. Just the hood.

When I get sick of looking at the image (or when the ink begins to fade in 4 to 6 years) I can just take an industrial strength hair dryer and peel it off. Then put something new on there like a picture of Megatron, Spider-man or Darth Maul. lol

I have used it before. I've personally used various vinyls the past 6 years.
There's really not that much difference in thickness. Although, various laminates applied to the vinyl can make a difference.

I know i would be laughing too.

BTW, there IS a huge difference in material thickness and application.
You should do more research before you put that ULGY thing on your car.
Cool design, but not for a hood, not on reflective vinyl, maybe on your wall

Very true, if you want a mural airbrush artist is the only way to go.

Vehicle vinyl is about 2mils thick where as reflective can be as thick as 8....thats 4x times thicker with no laminate and laminate is another 3 mils thick. If you dont have laminate on solvent printed vinyl you will scratch the print off by washing you car over the next year.

im with what the other guys said that are in the industry, i have been a designer for about 7 years now in the sign industry, but started out doing vinyl, i would love to see the ball of glue you'd scrape off your hood after a few years, have fun with that, and yeah, 3m reflective is so thick that you can rip it easily, try that with regular vinyl and you will see the difference a high quality thin mil vinyl will make...

to each is his own, i would have to say no on the vinyl, and no on the mural, unless you are trying to get into the lowrider euro magazine...?

its a cool design.... to show an art class..... but on a car i cant think of any good reason for it to be there. a civic with that graphic on the front hood? any reasoning behind it? if you want attention get a body kit and some rims..... that'll make your car more apealing to others then some crazy *** design on the hood
