Good luck with the new HU. You'll love it. I've been an avid fan of Pioneer stuff for quite a few years now.
I currently have a Pioneer HU installed too. It's an older model, DEX-P1R. Was a top of the line unit when I bought it though. I can't complain about it. It does *everything* and then some for me. Since it's older, it doesn't do the whole MP3 thing and whatnot, but oh well. I'll just figure out the whole AUX in on it and hook my iPod up to it.
Here's a link to it.

I was going to put it into my Neon when I had it, along with 4 MTX Thunder 5000 10s, but that didn't quite happen. I was going to go all out SPL, but I grew up.
The HU doesn't have a preamp in it, so I had to go out and buy a 4ch amp for the fronts and rears. That also *complete* control and balance of the speakers. Plus, it's got a built-in 13 band EQ that has a few presets, but also allows 2 custom EQs. It's a great deck and I give it

It's really simple to do too. Basically, just match the colors together and you should be good to go.

Radio shack, local electronics store, walmart, kmart, all should have the basic connectors you need.
Speaking of taping, here is my dont use tape story...
I wired my deck into my 97 vic years ago. That summer, the intense heat caused the tape to unstick and loosen, leaving some wire exposed. That wire bounced around as I drove until it finally touched another wire and POW.
Plus, unless you plan on removing the deck in a short time, there is no reason not to do it up right. Or use a wiring harness conector thingie.
