I was wondering what some of the members thoughts on the site were about painting rims, my rims are silver and i want them to be gunmetal. I was thinking of buying high temp engine paint then painting them myself. Does that sound like a good idea? or should i just go find a place in town and get them powder coated. how much you think that would run? anywayz my friend has a GTI with stock rims and he painted em with high temp paint and they look pretty nice so i was thinking about doing that instead of buying new rims. let me know what you think

Powdercoating requires a spray gun that can charge the powder. Then you need a rack that can charge the part to something like 9000 Volts so the powder sticks to it, then you need a furnace to bake the finish on. Not to mention it all needs to be done in an environmentally controlled booth and you need to grit blast and acid wash everything before you can even start coating. You can't DIY powdercoat in your garage. Its not simple.
Just pay for it, its about $50 to do a 17" wheel. But fill the fake rivets in first or figure out how to remove them so they can be put back in later, cuz powdercoating over those is going to look like ****.
