got in an accident today...
happened on my way home from work this morning, the guy behind me was trying to switch lanes and was looking at his mirrors instead of the cars ahead of him, then bam. there goes my day. it was a county owned and operated vehicle, the kind of trucks they use in my area to plow snow, minus the plow. blah, what a day.

CF trunks kickass. Yes they are an attention getter, isnt' that the whole point of modding your car? Originally posted by CarbonFly
Yea, lets just forget that it is less than half the weight of the stock trunk.

^fly, i dont mean to cut on your style. im just paranoid. my car has been broken into before, and i have some pretty expensive stuff in my trunk...getting a CF trunk for me is like putting an 'X' on the map for the pirates to get my stuff. i mean, dont get me wrong, i like the look and cleanly woven cf is very beautiful, but its not one of my concerns for the time to be honest with you.
besides, if youre serious about saving weight, you might as well strip out your interior too. a few pounds less on your rear end really wont make that much of a difference. well, not one youd be able to notice anyways.

Oh, I completely understand. My style isn't for everyone. Just wanted to make sure you had all the correct info. BTW, a new trunk will probably cost more than a CF one after painting, etc....

yea, i think the bumper is salvageable too, it just needs to be repainted. but some work has to be done to re-center the trunk latch.

Sorry to hear about the car, skip. Doesn't look too bad. At least it's fixable.
I agree with both statements 100%. This whole carbon fiber craze is old already. Why not put Alpine stickers or some other high dollar brand name on the rear window too, so they can pick out your car in the parking lot. Might as well save them some time. Why hit the other cars when they know yours has big money parts on it. Honestly, I never understood why some idiot would put their stereo brand on their car. It's like saying "HEY! OVER HERE! STEAL ME!"
Most of the CF products you see for sale are fake and contain no CF in them anyway. Most people just want "the CF look." Kinda pathetic. If people just want the look, they should just get those cheap CF stickers and cover the parts themselves.
Before the pro-CF ***** start bitching...I could NOT care less about CF, so don't bother.

You seem to be kinda hating on me lately hluver. What's wrong? Don't like the idea that you aren't the only one with a CF gas lid anymore? Or is it that you spent 3 times the cost that I did on mine?

My whole trunk is stripped. I have no sound system. The CF hood weighs 16lbs, versus stock which is 35lbs. The CF trunk weighs 12.5lbs versus stock which is 24lbs.
When I first started with the car stock it ran 11.8 on 1/8 mile track. Now it runs 10.7. That's how much of a difference it is making. If CF was just for looks then why does every F1 race team build their cars out of the fabric? It is not just for looks. Of course it looks impressive, but it also has other strengths.

I said, "Most of the CF products," not all of them.
Secondly, I did not mention you by name.
Thirdly, you brag too much. Reel it back in a bit.

the difference in weight from all that CF stuff is like driving around with a slightly emptier tank of gas. i will get a CF hood eventually, but for the look, not the F1 status racing garbage. F1 cars are made completely out of aluminum AND carbon fiber as well as other carbon composites. weight reduction would start by the restructuring of the cars' overall layout dynamics. no interior, only electical components would include DOT required lights, fuel pump and FI system. period. no dome light, map lights, power equipment or cruise control. eliminating the luxuries is the basics of weight reduction. sorry, i just refuse to believe that changing a few body panels is gonna make your car more race-oriented.

id stick w/ oem parts for the body. if that was a CF trunk, or if you had a hood and it was a front collision you would probably have much more serious damage and possible injuries. OEM parts are designed to crumble, absorbing the impact. CF will either break sending shards possible towards you, or it will flex and recoil, possible back into the windshield. IMO its not worth it for the "weight reduction" that it offers.
sorry to hear about the damage skip, good luck w/ the repairs.
