Cutting Coils on my Prokit Springs

I had 17" Katana VR7's installed today with 45/215 tires and I gotta say, getting the Prokit was an absolute waste of money!! Getting aftermarket rims really accentuated my car's gap..as well as its "rally-car" look.

I can live with the gap on front (1.5 fingers) but the rear is a little more than a 2 finger gap.

The shop I normally go to said they can cut a coil from each of the rear springs for 30 bucks or 60 bucks to do the entire car. My question is...can I cut two coils from each of the rear springs and one from the front springs? Also, am I correct in assumming that for each coil that is cut, the car will drop the same distance as the thickness of each coil?

VNLiLMAN, I read in an old post that you were going to check to see if it was OK to cut more than one dead coil. Did you ever get around to that?

I know getting new springs (like the Goldlines NS Sports) would be a better alternative, but considering the sizable cost difference of the two options, I'm willing to compromise a bit.

BTW, I did a quick check of my springs and there appear to be 5 "dead" coils in the rear.....couldn't tell in the front.

Also, I have Konis as well.

Maybe you should let them settle for a week or more. For instance my sportlines for the first few months only only dropped my coupe about 1 1/4". Now theyre about 1 1/2" total. If you do decide to cut a coil, ask him what method he plans on using. I heard that using a cutting torch isnt the best way since it heats up the coil and can make it lose some of its tensil strength. Somethin like that. See if he has some type of blade cutter instead. Also one coil is what about a 1/2"? I'm guessing here, but I suggest you only do one coil at a time. MAke sure he cuts it in the right spot to since it has to sit in both the upper and lower perches correctly. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, thx.

the prokit is a waste of money. it's pretty much like stock springs. try to sell it and get sportlines, or neuspeed. the drop from either of those spings will go well with your rims and tires

I've had them on for a while now...about 8 months and they're fully settled. When looking at my car today, the front actually looked really nice, but the gap on the rear was just plain annoying. (Why can't my car look like 01Coupe's car?!).

Thanks for the suggestions......both of you.

One thought that crossed my mind was that I run the risk of the rear ending up lower than the front if I cut a coil from the rear. I think I'm gonna follow Weaponx's advice and consider replacing my springs.

-thats why i tell people the prokit is a waste of money if your going for a lowered look. hell i even thought my sports were.
-to answer your question, yes it is perfectly fine to cut a DEAD COIL(coils that touch together). they are only there to keep the springs from popping out when raising the car.
-"Also, am I correct in assumming that for each coil that is cut, the car will drop the same distance as the thickness of each coil?" nope you have to remember the distribution. lower the rear end, the more the rear end holds. so its going to be a little more then the diameter of the coil. not sure how much tho.
-maybe save those $60 for a system? before i had a 1 finger gap in the rear, now with about 100 lbs in the trunk i dont have any.
-what ever happened to nyryder's springs? didnt buy them?

Hey, thanks for the info VN!

Nytryder's neuspeeds were sold to someone else. Argh! Just gotta keep an eye out for a good GB or someone else selling their used springs......or just go ahead and cut all 4 springs.

Not really into sound systems (I'm old!) and don't feel like spending another chunk of money on my car for a while now......

I totally agree that the Prokit's are a waste of money (haha, great...now it'll be tough to sell them here after all the ranting we've done!). I couldn't tell with my steelies...but with my new rims, the gap looks pretty nasty.
