spring orientation

do springs need to be installed in a specific fashion ? lettering upside down or right side up ? does it make a diff ?
just a little confused here, so if anyone can answer this with technical knowledge it would be greatly apreciated.

jaydm21 is an unknown quantity at this point
i dunno what kind of springs you have but i got the h&r springs and they were labled where to what corner they went to. as far as installing them, on mine the bottom of the spring has 2 coils that are together and the upper has one coil by itself. the end with two coils goes in the bottom. if the springs have writing or the logo on it then it should face up where you can read it normal, thats how mine are. sorry if this doesn't make since but its the best i could think of on how to explain it. good luck with the install!

pretty sure that's how variable-rate springs (and coilovers) get installed. The tighter packed segment at the bottom, and the a looser/wider segment at the top.

When i installed my DropZone springs, the logo on the springs in the front were correct, but logos on the rear springs were upside down...

ya, i got HRs and I installed them with the tighter coils at the bottem... but again, the way I see it. Does anyone have any tech info on why springs should be installed in such a fashion ?

basically the tighter coils are "softer" and will compress more easily than the wider spaced coils, because of the design.

the tighter coils are on the bottom compress to absorb minor bumps and imperfections in the roads, before passing the force to the wider coils and then into the body of the vehicle.

having the spaced out coils on the chassis allows the spring to react faster when there is a dip or recess in surface level. The vehicle's weight pushes against the wider coils and makes it expand before the tighter coils can expand.

The tighter coils at the bottom make the major movements during "Jounce". The wider coils at the top play the lead role in "Rebound".

hooray for physics! special thanks to RHCP0801 for letting me borrow the great shot of his suspension!

damn, that musta took a while +1 for that
i get what your trying to say, but if the springs where installed upside down per say... wouldn't the tigher/softer coils still compress before the harder/more open ones ?

that i really havent caught the concept of yet either

I know that if installation was reversed and the tighter coils were at the top, whenever there's a bump in the road the entire spring would move up until the tighter coils at the top absorb the force. I guess all thats just waste motion and dont know if it has any bad effect on the strut/shock.

but it's pretty hard to install them upside down since the spring only fits good one way over spring seat of the strut (on our cars anyway)
