cutting dead coils?

well, from my previous post (for those who have read)
it seems most likely i have gotten sold a used set of rsx progress springs instead of civic progress springs (not confirmed, but most likely from how my car is sitting)..either the guy was mistaken when he bought them used, or he just is screwing me over..i dunno ??

anyways

if i were to cut/remove a dead coil from the spring to make it a bit lower, will that be "okay".
i am 100% against cutting stock springs, but how will cutting affect the structure of a aftermarket progressive spring? im in the market for new shocks anyways, and just wanted to know what opinions you guys have.

also, if these ARE rsx springs, how will the spring rate affect my car?

..this whole spring issue is just getting me more n more pissed because i just want to have a decent height for my ride argg ><
like someone posted when i did a search, im willing to compromise a bit to save cash, instead of buying new springs/coil overs + install

thanks!

pics will be up shortly so you guys can be the judge
(currently still 2 finger gap front 3 finger gap rear)

-rsx springs?
-still need more time to settle (currently 2 weeks since install)?
-cutting coil wont do much either?
-etc etc

Oh they're rsx springs? I thought they were progress from your previous thread some time ago. Oh well, I highly recommend NOT cutting the rsx springs. Just keep em how they are and save up for some aftermarket springs/shocks, this seems like the path you want to go. Just save yourself the time and effort and keep the springs how they are.

ya from a while back i thought they were also progress civic springs, but apparently time has proven me wrong, and it seems to be rsx springs instead
*sigh*

c kim u were useful in giving advice on my last threads, do you still think there could be time for these to settle to a 1.8" 2.0" drop?

damn man, you need to find that dude, get your money back, then beat his ***. RSX springs won't lower your car, sorry to say. They just have a diff. spring rate I believe. Some people buy aftermarket rsx springs for their 7thgen to get their desired spring rate. Well best of luck with your future purchases.

Progress springs are aqua colored. If they're not, and just a blank black, then they're def. stock springs. Unless the dude that sold em to you is some kind of bastard and painted them or something.

^ well it came with a progress box, and are that turquoise color etc etc..
but the part no. sticker was 'removed' so i couldn't identify the part (40.1006 for civics) their not rsx springs, but might be progress springs made for the rsx *sigh*

so i ono..thanks for all your input guys - really appreciate it!

I retract my previous statement about beating his ***. Those are the right springs according to the pics. I don't think it's gonna get any lower. What you received are probably the progress springs designed for the rsx. They only lower the rsx 1.5 F/R. While the progress springs designed specifically for us 7thgens lowers the car 1.8F/2.0R. So the gaps you are showing are going to stay.

Now back to the subject. I honestly can't give you a straight answer on cutting these springs. While some will say it's ok to cut a deadcoil off, others will forbid you to do it. I personally have no experience with cutting springs so............

so cutting shouldn't totally affect my ride or other aspects of the car?
im just worried that cutting might compromise "other significant things" that i am not aware off =P

but if all is good, and should be reasonably ok..then hmm...

Cutting a progressive spring shoudn't be a problem, as long as you cut the end that the coils stack up on(dead coils), the spring rate won't change and the stress on the active coils won't change. You might not get as much drop as you hope for tho. Looking at your rear picture, the bottom of the spring has maybe 2+ coils stacked so you have some material to cut. Not sure about the Progress fronts, if they're stacked at the top or bottom you could make it work. Keep in mind that the rear motion ratio is 1.7, if you cut 1 stacked coil from the rear it will drop maybe .5" times 1.7 or .85" (if the wire is .5" thick). The front motion ratio is approx .95 so if you cut 1 stacked coil you would get roughly .5" times .95 or .475". So don't cut much off the rear unless you want it lower than the front. At some point if you cut more the spring won't seat well and the spring rate will start to go up, and it may actually start raising the car.

My guess is that you could get about .5" lower but not much more. Any idea how much lower these springs are than your stockers? I've been looking for stiffer springs than stock with no drop...can't seem to find the spring rate for the Progress RSX springs if that's what they are...

Front looks good, the back could be a tad lower. I wouldn't mess with the front though. Did you cut them already?

don't cut your springs... trust me on this. stupid thing to do. save up money and do it the right way. my friend cut his spring and he ended up buying new ones after a few months because of the ride. Just save up money and buy some true coilovers from TEIN. i have the basics and love them. You're able to drop your ride to your likely. I had to drop mine approx. 5 times to get the exactly drop i want. So it's wroth the money

spend a little money now and save more money in the long run
