Sway Bar Woes..
Sway Bar Woes..
I posted this question in the Vechicle problems section but I kinda felt that was the wrong place to post it and I wanted to delete it but couldn't not. So I'm sorry from cross posting. Please forgive...and if a moderator happens to see this please delete the one from the other section. Thank you.
Ok my problem:
Installed the 22mm sway bar and feel in love..but noticed that every single damn time I took a left handed turn HARD there would be a horrendus loud banging noise that was hollow sounding. After research on the forum I can to 2 conclusions, 1 installed backwards, 2 exhaust pipe hitting sway bar. I know I didn't install the sway backwards cuz I did that the first time, and I don't think the exhaust pipe is hitting the bar because I have a stock exhaust and theres a lot of clearence between the bar and the exhaust pipe above it, a good inch.
Now i figure hey maybe if u take a turn fast the right rear strut compresses so much that the sway bar actually can come up and hit the exhaust pipe. But after some in garage testing I don't think so. I had my dad go to the right rear and start pump the strut up and down by pushin on the trunk. While I was under looking at the sway and pipe to see if they ever touch. They didn't even come close if not even move in any direction. Now I'm really clueless about the loud hollow banging noise and its starting to scare me, cuz I dunno what the hell it is.
It never happens when I make a right turn ( i think ) and if i make moderate to slow left handed turns its fine. Only when I take it fast, and it doesn't happen at the end or middle of the turn, it happens right when i turn the wheel hard. Please someone help my little civic is injured!
Thanks

Its hitting the exhaust. Your dad pushing on the car is no where near the force of the car cornering and it doesn't account for the exhaust pipe swinging around.

Have your dad do the same thing while you wiggle the muffler by the exhaust tip. Give it a good wiggle to simulate bouncing around a turn. Also look for anything that could be rubbing.
SON of a god damn bitch if its the exhuast im gunna be pissed, cuz its stock and I want to get an after market exhaust on there. But its going to take me 2 months to get the money. So that means I shouldn't even waste me money getting the stock exhaust bent. I should just wait and get the aftermarket one and then get that one bent to fit.
You guys think thats a better idea? Thanks for the replies guys...

Try and find out what the real problem is first, then decide what you wanna do. If it is the stock exhaust, I'd just go back to the stock swaybar until your ready. Not worth risking any damage.
Yea what I did was I went under just now and taped up the section of the sway bar that I think is hitting the exhaust piping. I figured that if theres a bit of tape on there it should change the tone of the bang. If the tone changes then we know its the sway coming into contact with the exhaust. Now to just get it to bang...

I have a piece of engine hose wrapped around my sway bar. It doesn't clang but I can hear it tap it. I used a metal ring (the ones that screw tight) to hold the hose in place.

That might be why. It technically is not a direct fit sway like Progress.
The 04-05 EM2 are gonna have a slightly different sway bar design from Progress to rememdy that scenario.

No prob.
Ok well....I went out and bought a hose today. Perfect fit...with a little spray of lubricant my buddy and I got the hose on good. We then clamped it down. The hose starts from the right side of the sway where it connects to the end link and goes all to about 1 inch away from the right side bushing. And guess what...it still clunks..soo obviously I didn't install it wrong...and its not hitting the exhaust..soo now what?
My dad has a theory that the sway bar is actually flexing and that since its designed to not flex its actually snapping which causes the loud sound, but he thinks there should be 2 loud bangs instead of the one i'm getting, or he says the endlink is snappin which is causing the sound...I honestly don't think that is it cuz the bang is loud. Could it be my sway bar hitting something else?

nope.. it sounds like it was installed wrong. especially considering how many others have that 22mm bar and your the only one thats having problems with it....
eh... Sell it to Robb... I'm sure he'll make good use of it.

I know I didn't install it wrong...cuz if flip the bar around it will definitely hit the left suspension arm, the way its currently installed the bar curves up and leaves a gap for the left suspension arm to come up when the suspension is compressed. The banging sound is from I dunno what but I'm not giving up yet...
Here maybe pics will help...does this look installed wrong to u? If it is tell me cuz the damn banging noise is killin me...

Not greasing the bushings shouldn't cause a problem just some squeeks. If you put it back on then grease them up. Bar looks installed correctly. Can you tell if it is hitting the exhaust. You can also see if stronger exhaust hangers work. They come in different strengths to allow more or less wobble.
AGain, if you don't want it, feel free to ship to me
LoL...man my last resort will be to ship it to u...I love the bar hate the banging ... i know its hitting something but I can't figure it out...i think imma bring it to the shop.
BTw thanks for all the help guys and the pic robb...although I haven't fixed the problem u guys have helped in know what isn't causing the problem...I'm sure i'll get this fixed soon.
AH I think I found my answer to my problem...GREASING THE BUSHINGS...I figured I really didn't need to grease the bushing when I installed them...and I figured it would cause a loud clunking sound if I didn't grease them...but low and behold i found this thread.
http://forums.clubrsx.com/archive/in.../t-210838.html
This guy didn't grease his bushing and he got the clunking sound I think I am getting soo I ran out at 11 tonite...grabbed some grease and within 25 mins of getting home had the stock bar of and the 22mm bar on and all greased up..
Only problem is that its kinda late to open my garage door cuz its all loud so I have to wait till tomorrow morning to find out if it worked. I hope it did...Imma pray to the car gods tonite....jesus I hope this works...

I seriously do not think it is because of not greasing them, but feel free to try. It can't hurt. I really think you are hitting your exhaust, but if it works, more power to ya.

If its on the right way did you torque all the bolts to spec and you greesed everything.... I wonder what the hell the noise is?I put a lot of greese on my bushings.
I had mine on backwards and it has hitting the exhaust and control arms.

I know mine isn't on backwards...even robb said I didn't install it backwards...I dunno if I can torque the bolts to spec cuz I'm just using a wrench and muscle...but I doubt thats making the sound. I know a few friends who own some shops...gunna try to head out today and see if they can fix it.
