Koni Question
Koni Question
I need to replace my front struts, and I was planning on upgrading all around. It seems that the Koni's are the best choice, just about only choice, for upgrading only the struts/shocks. My question is if there are any drawbacks to the fronts only being inserts and not full replacements. Thanks
Also I have seen that Spoon makes a non-adjustable damper kit. I've looked around a lot, but can't find anywhere that sells it. I've heard from a few people that they aren't going to produce it for the EP3. Does anyone know if it is for sale anywhere, and any info on it. I haven't heard about the quality or ride, only that one person said it is just an OEM replacement that's lighter. Any info on the Spoon or Koni would be appriciated. Thanks.

the drawbacks for the fronts not being full replacements, is that they aren't full replacements. You have to cut your front strut to make them fit and if you don't do it right it can lead to problems. They aren't a direct swap.
I think www.aj-racing.com or www.kingmotorsports.com should have the spoons.

Konis are good dampers, one of the best you can get for the money. Regarding the Spoon damper kit, Personally I dont think its worth it. You'll spend more for a set of dampers that arnt adjustible Just so you can have the name Spoon. just doesnt seem right.
Regardless of the price and the fact that the Spoons aren't adjustable, are the Spoons as good as the Konis. I'm looking at quality and dependability over a long period of time.
i have konis..they are nice b/c you can adjust the stiffness, it is well worth the money, and spoon is just expensive b/c it has the name on it, but really its probably the same just without adjustability

I have the Koni's on my EM2 and I LOVE THEM!!! They are a LIL stiffer than stock on their SOFTEST setting, but when they're on the hardest setting..VERY NICE!!!! The adjustability is PERFECT for AutoX tuning, and they're tough as nails....trust me, mine fell out and just keep tickin', lol. I'm retarded and didn't tighten down the bottom bolt that holds the insert in, so don't be scared, it's just me. If you do the install right (maybe 4 hours total) you'll be in LOVE with them. IMO...there's none better, for the price.
Thanks for the advice. I'll probably get the Koni's but have them prof. installed becasue I don't have all the needed tools. So from what I can tell the only big problem with our front suspension is the actual struts, not with the entire assembly. I just dont want to put a great pair of struts in and still have problems down the road. I'll follow up with new springs shortly after.

Why have a professional install shocks first and then get springs intalled later? You will be paying for the install twice, plus you run the risk of things not lining up correctly the second time. The installer will have to take the top mount apart again to put the springs on. I suggest doing it all at once to save you some money, but whatever.
Thats probably a better idea, I'm just gonna have to wait a little longer to get it all. What about the KYB non-adjustable struts? I've read mixed reviews about them. I'm not looking for adjustability. I just want good struts with well matched springs. If I get the KYB's with a good set of springs will the KYB's be an improvement over stock? I've heard that the KYB's are the same as the stock struts.

The GR-2's aren't meant to be lowered on. They are an OEM style replacement. I heard they were really soft on other cars. You can probably get those with the Pro kit because it is such a small drop but nothing lower. I have no personal experience with them though.
