Question Koni Removal Question..

I was thinking when I have the money again....That I was going to go with a set of 18" Rims and change out my suspension.

Currently, I have 17" Rims with 2" drop in the front and 1.8" drop in the rear. (of course it's lower after settling).

Anyway, I need to raise the car up a little bit so that the 18's fit perfectly and that I have no wheel well space at the top.

Now my question is this:

I have the full Koni conversion in the front with Koni on the rear as well. Since I got the conversion done, can I still remove those struts if I am getting the Tein SS system?

I was thinking of just replacing the springs with ones that don't lower so much, but I can't seem to find some that are around the 1" - 1.5" mark that lower more in the front and less in the rear. I am thinking that I would need about 1.2" drop in the front and 1" drop in the rear.

So I think I will just go Tein SS since I can adjust those up or down and all that. But that would mean the removal of the Koni's in front and rear right?

Anyway, input is appreciated. Thanks!

yes you need to remove the konis. You will also need new front struts since you chopped up them for the konis.

Question But...

I was under the impression that since the Tein SS is a FULL coilover kit (true coilovers), that they replace the struts along with the spring part? Am I missing something here? If I still have to have struts, than what is the advantage of having true coilover kits? I have searched and read about them and this is the impression I got.

If I did get the Tein replacements, yes I would be selling the complete Koni set.

But I need to make sure Tein is definitely what I want to do.

Quite possibly once I find someone that wants to buy my spring/Koni combo, I will place an order for Teins, but not at the moment. I have to make sure I can get the money first

BTW: If anyone reading this is interested in Intrax Springs (2" Front, 1.8" rear) and full set of Konis give me a PM.

Thumbs up This is what I am thinking...

I would rather not JUSt sell the Koni's as I would need to sell everything to afford the Tein SS setup.

I think that a reasonable price would be around $750.00 for everything.

Please remember that I had to pay a pretty penny to have the Koni's in the front inserted. And I have checked several places and the 4 struts new (without front install and custom fit) is around $600.00 without tax or shipping. And the INtrax springs I have are around $230 I think.

My setup has been on my car about a year. Not one problem with the struts. The shop that did the conversion did an excellent job (which is probably why I paid so much). They are known for good suspension work.

Anyway, if anyone wants the complete set for $750.00 let me know with a PM!

if you want to keep the koni's and save some money, you can swap out the springs you have now for SLEEVED coilovers and that way you'll be able to adjust it to the perfect height that you desire (and maybe later slam it down for show which tein ss can't do)

there should be no modification or cutting involved

if you want a smoother ride get ground control, but if i have like 3 people in the back, it bottoms out sometimes (i have gc and koni)

but if you want it a bit stiffer but rougher ride (and lower chance of bottoming out w/ passengers) get skunk 2 because they have a higher spring rate...

Well I thought that Coilovers (sleeved) have too many drawbacks.

Such as:

1) Make A LOT of noise.
2) Don't stay adjusted very well (changes over time)
3) Bounces A LOT. (there goes the smooth ride from springs I like).

If the above were not an issue I would jump all over a good set of sleeved coilovers.

1. my gc's don't make noise (they only make noise if they are installed incorrectly)
2. they don't change over time, at least mine haven't (had them over a year and i make the adjuster screw fairly tight)
3. thats what you have koni's for... the only people that complain about sleeved coilovers are those with blown stock shocks... i admit that was one of them... but after i installed my konis the bouncing was all gone...

i think gc's are well designed.. just don't get those cheap $80 ones on e-bay because those are crap and you will definitely have those 3 problems...

that is why i recommended only gc and skunk 2 because they make quality stuff...

i haven't seen anyone w/ gc sleeved (or skunk 2) + koni complain about the ride other than it is a bit rougher than stock (i could be wrong though)

I have another quick question for you then.

With coilovers, is there less travel from the up and down movement (not necessarily bouncy) than springs...I guess I am wondering if they are indeed stiffer. With my Intrax I can still bottom out from time to time.
