OEM brake life lasts longer than 80kmi

I have an '02 SI with ~80kmi and ordered some red stuff pads earlier this summer. I had plan on swapping the pads out as a mechanic pointed out during my buy inspection (45kmi/2years ago) that the rear had 40% life left. When I looked at the pads, they still had alot of life left in them as far as I can tell. Maybe I just don't know what I'm looking at. I'll try to post some pic later. I'm almost certain that these are the OEM pads as I am the second owner. Does anyone know how long the OEM brakes should last?

As a side note, there are many threads on this forum about bleeding the brake fluids. Do you use this same process to "flush out" the old brake fluid with the new one? A good DIY link would be greatly appreciated.

Attach are the front and rear wheels brake pads. The rusted looking one is from the rear. I'm a little concerned about the rear ones as it sounded funny this morning.

Re: OEM brake life lasts longer than 80kmi

There is no "set miles" for brake life. It all depends on how hard/often you used the brakes. If you engine brake, they are going to last how much longer....

Re: OEM brake life lasts longer than 80kmi

I kind of figure that braking habits would influence brake life however I was just astonished from the readings that I have done on this site with brake life as low as 1 year. However, from the pictures, can someone tell me how much life I have left or what the "min" thickness I should let the pads run to before changing out the pads?

Assuming the pads on the other side look the same, they are fine. But, some times they wear uneven.

Re: OEM brake life lasts longer than 80kmi

your fine on the rears, I wouldn't even bother there is plenty of pad there.

The fronts do the majority of the braking anyway.

You will know when it is time to change the pads because there is a small metal indicator on the pad that scrapes the rotor when it gets time to start looking for new pads. you will start to hear an annoying squeal every time you hit the brakes.

And judging from the looks of it you are going to need to replace your fronts before the rear's

Re: OEM brake life lasts longer than 80kmi

yeah it's generally a 70/30 split between front and rear. That means you'll have replaced your front pads at least twice before you replace your rear pads...in theory of course.

Re: OEM brake life lasts longer than 80kmi

well the rears are drums, ofcourse they will last forever cause they hardly do any of the braking, maybe 15% where the front pads and rotors do most of it. im at 87k and my drums are still the factory pieces. im on my third set of pads and second set of rotors. depends where you live too tho. around here you have to brake alot and my pads are already almost gone after only a year. the average driver needs to replace brake parts every 40k miles.

Re: OEM brake life lasts longer than 80kmi

66,000 - my brakes still work great. I engine brake a good amount and use the ancient art of coasting when possible.

anyone have a good range on when the fronts should be replaced?
(besides the noise makers kickin in eventually lol)

Thanks,
-K

If your mechanic said you have 40% left on those pads I would consider a new mechanic those probably have close to 80% left

lol how else would they sell brake pads and the labor. you cant wait until the whole pad gets used up, just like you have to get oil change every 3k miles.
