Kuhmo Ecsta Supra 712's SUCK

I dunno how I heard so many good things about these tires a while back. I used to own a set of Nankang NS1 Radials (cheapest tire you can buy I believe), and I thought those were decent. I got these very new set of Kuhmo's with some used rims from Doublins. Have LOTS of tread left on them. It's been raining all week, and it's so annoying driving with them. I have to make turns starting from 5 mph into oncoming traffic or my tires will skid. Same thing when I start from a stop light. If I try to brake hard everytime I'm running over one of the white lines where you stop for the light, my tires skid. I have a pressure gauge in my car, and they all have the recommended 44 psi in them which is written on the tire. I thought these tires were suppose to be good

are you sure it says recomended or does it say max? because you are not suppost to put it on the max, i have 712's at 38psi and sure it slips, the reason i got them was because it was the best bang for the buck. all cars are going to slip, unless you have all wheel drive. pick up the latest consumer reports, it talks about breaking and taking off in snow and wet weather for rwd, fwd, awd...

first off, they are good for the money, but there are better tires out there, if you wanted the best you shoulda been willing to spend more. Secondly, 44psi is way to high to be running on the street, I run around 41-42 in my potenza's for autocross, and thats even more than most people run.

Yeah, I think around 32-35 psi is perfect.... Nothing over that... Try that and see if you still think they suck. I love my tires!!!

wow you guys are right. when i bought them they had around 35 psi. i read the sidewall and it said 44 psi. so i aired them up. now they're pretty noisy and ride a little rougher. im gonna drop them back down to 35 psi.

i think falken 512s are about the same price.. they're decent on wet conditions.
and 33 might be a little too low. there was an article grey posted up, it said something like add 2 psi for every plus size. for example if you have an LX and the pressure for the stock tires is 33, go with 35 with 15", 37 with 16", 39 with 17" and, 41 with 18". search and you should find the article.

I have the Falken Ziex ZE-502 and love them in the rain. I was thinking about the Kumho 712s because everyone on this site had them, but then I notice they also live in much warmer climates and dont deal with as much rain/snow. So I opted for the extra $100 for the set and got the Falkens. I love them.

Exactly. I figure the only thing holding your whole car to the ground is your tires. Strut Bars, Suspension upgrades...all nice extras, but if your tires suck then you're screwed. If there's any place to make a solid investment for handling, it's in the tires...that's my opinion.

I'm running Yokohama Parada Spec 2's (215/40/18) and get excellent wet and dry traction. I was quite amazed to be honest 'cause it seems like high performance tires rarely get a grip on the wet stuff. Definitely worth the money. In addition I have almost every suspension mod available (frt upper strut brace, Neuspeed Sport springs, Koni inserts, Neuspeed frt bushings, Progress Rear Sway/Tie bar set-up, Honda OEM '02 performance mid-brace, RS Akimoto floor bar).

So far, so good.

I had the Supra 712 tires on my 17's too when i got them and hated every minute with them. I put on Sumitomo HTR+ tires now, and they made a world of difference, plus they have nearly as good of dry traction as paradas and are all season performance, and since i put them on i nearly never slip on wet pavement from a dead stop, and my car hasnt slipped once yet while it was moving when taking fast turns or hard corners. I hate the snow but i cant wait to see how well they perform in it since they are supposed to be the best all seasons as far as snow traction.

I'm sure the air pressure plays a big part of this. As far as the tires go....I would take Parada's before the Kumho's. Although I've read up on Sumitomo, I still don't know a whole lot about them. Kumho ecsta is pretty good bang for the buck, but the downside is the wet performance......to get that....you'll have to shell out a bit more money.

I don't have a problem with my Kumho's. I like them, the only gripe i have is that after 10k miles they got kinda noisy. I ride with the radio loud to i dont ever hear it anyways.

ray, how much did you pay for those?...just curious. I'm trying to find other tires for the same price that are better to reccomend to ppl instead of kumho's....too many complaints about them. So many ppl get them because they come cheap w/ their rims. I know some ppl who bought them just because of the hype about them, not the actual numbers or anything....sad, sad.

I just put them down to 35 PSI right away I read the thread. The next day it was a lil bit wet, I push the peddle 1/3 of the way down, skidded tires still

i dont know what you are all complaining about. first i was running them at 29 psi(tire rack inflated), then i noticed the pressure, so i aired them up to 44. all i noticed was a little rougher ride but not that bad. they now have 12,000 miles and no abnormal treadwear. the front has half the tread that the rear has, but all they need is rotated. as for in the wet. i love them. i very rarely had them spin at a stop, and i dont ever remember them losing grip in a wet turn or stopping.

Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's have one of the best price to performance ratio's out there. They are in the same league as these tires: Tire Test Results This is a very good article. If you are in the market for a tire with price and performance in mind, then read that article and choose one of the three. I chose the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's (annoyingly long name) because of their high UTQG rating (Uniform Tire Quality Grade); namely, the treadwear rating. They have 280 AA A vs. the Yokohama A520's 180 A A.

Yeah, grey, i'll have to agree w/ the high treadwear index on those. For such a high category, they'll last for quite awhile. I read your air pressure guide, makes sense......is air pressure the reason that some ppl are complaining about supra 712's wet traction? It just seems that ya have to shell out more to get excellent wet traction.

On the topic of treadwear ratings.....my michelin's are 680, i didn't believe it becuase they are performance all season, and actually do perform quite well. Trouble is, i don't like to keep tires, or many things, for 80,000 miles

44PSI is their seating pressure .. only to be used when mounting the tires to the rims..

Well, I think that if you overinflate you're making the contact patch smaller. That means there's less rubber holding you to the road. You need more pressure up front than in back, but only a little more. Mine are very good in the rain. I was actually doing things I usually do when it's dry when it had just rained and I was like, "Whoops!". I forgot that it had just rained. No problems with traction though. I don't know, I haven't tried any other tires yet, so I may be biased. I definately llike these more than the stock tires. I'de say that they have twice the grip when it's wet as stock and three times the grip when it's dry. Something like that...

They came with my rims, but on the invoice they said 85 a piece. I think thats reasonable for what they are. I live in south carolina and it doesnt rain all that much. I've only felt it slide once in the rain and that was when i ran through a big puddle so what do you expect then. I'm still running them at the psi as they were when they arrived at my house. I like them still.
