Well, I can help a little.
1. Pros: 18's look better. That's about it.
Cons: Heavier, so may slow your ride down a little, and they cost more. Tires are more expensive, too. Also, easier to dent/scrape, but only slightly. Also, on stock springs, you'll raise about an inch or so.
2. I'd say 18's, if you get a light set. They look better, and you ride just as fast.
3. 18's with a 215/40/18 will fit no problem with no rub. In fact, you can drop with goldlines and still have no rub, if I'm not mistaken. And with a set of 18's, you'll want a drop, otherwise you'll look like a 4wheeler.
Advice: Try to find a set that will weigh the same or less than your steelies with tires. With a 40 series tire you'll have less chance of busting a rim, but I'd still drive carefully if I were you. I'd also invest in a camber kit if you don't already have one, and an upgraded set of shocks to match any lowering springs you decide on (I still recommend goldlines). Just be prepared to catch a few eyes!

I have a quick question on the topic of wheel size. With the stock wheels and tires you have a given total diameter. If you keep your aftermarket wheels and tires in that same diameter, would it actually raise your car to make it look too high?

Even if your car isn't any higher, it'll still LOOK higher because the bottom of the fender will be closer to the rim of the wheel.
As far as a camber kit, w/ a 17" rim I don't think it's an all out NECESSITY, but I'd recommend it to anyone with aftermarket wheels, just to save your tires. And I'd DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone w/ aftermarket wheels AND suspension. Just a precaution.

i have 215-40-18s with neuspeed sports, 1 finger gap all around. no rub. dont have to worry too much about road hazards. but ya it raised my car .6"(cause its .6" bigger in diameter then stock) so now i have like a 1" drop rather then a 1.75" drop(ground clearance wise). it still looks pretty high so i'll probably get a kit. i'm kinda thinking i should have gone with 215-35-18 or maybe 225-35-18 cause the 40 series is a lil too thick for me. but then again atleast it saves my rims so..
Yeah I am looking at 17" or 18" also but 18" is a little more expensive for replacing tires and so on. Also I hear the performance on the 17" is better than 18" but if you have the cash and good roads I say 18". Where I live 18" would attract attention and they would get jacked

. i mean i know theres that risk of getting jacked but just prevent that from happening by getting 4 different wheel locks if you have to, a good alarm, etc... dont let thieves discourage you from making your car look good. i almost got jacked once already and only had them for a month but i also had many people complimenting my rims so its worth it to me. i just try to keep a good eye on it when i'm in badd neighborhoods.
