Rims in winter

I am thinking about adding some rims, how long do they last, and is it safe to drive them in the wintertime?

you will damage your rims in a hurry by driving with them on in the winter - there is just too much debris on the road that time of year. lots of people buy summer rims and keep their stock steelies for winter driving.

Well I am going throught the same thing I am going to buy rims but living in the North West in the rain and potholes I doubt I will keep them on anytime but the summer so by the time I get money for rims over the summer work it will be rain time again so can't really win.

your best bet is to purchase rims in the middle of winter when prices tend to be lower. It may kill you having brand new rims & rubber sitting in your room for a few months... but some stores will give a quote on the price which they will honour in the spring time when you want to get your winters off.

Around my area, winter tires are prettymuch required (i'd have never trusted my brand new civic to those stock firestones) We have lots of hills, and lots of snow. That said... what I would like to do someday, is have my set of steelies with winter tires mounted on em... then in the summer I'll have a set of rims with summer rubber installed on them... then when the times come, I'll just swap off the wheels and keep the rubber mounted... No car looks very showy in the winter anyways cause of all the crap all over the roads... so having no rims in the winter is no biggie

poor tracking, salt and sand will kill your clear coat on the rims, and hidden pot holes will dent them up. I suggest getting a cheap set of snow tires for your steelies.

Waxing your rims will help a little bit with the clearcoat problem, but it won't prevent big dents and scratches. Just my $0.02 .

When it comes to snow tires, I do not recommend getting a cheap set just to save a few bucks. If there is a lot of snow and ice where you are, there is no substitute for a set of 4 good winter tires. Look at it as a kind of extra insurance during tough winter driving. I know my Arctic Alpins saved my *** a few times this past winter... they are not cheap, but they were worth every single penny I paid for them.

thanks guys, i understand, and it makes a lot of sense to have 2 pairs of tires. I just thought there would be a way that i could use 1 pair year round.
