brakes grabby and hot

So my wife was complaining about her brakes making a slight grinding noise just before reaching a stop and sometimes a slight sqeal, so I cleaned them and put it back together several months ago and it never really fixed the problem. The brakes worked fine, and the pads still have tons of life in them. Today I finally got tired of her naggin and decided to just replace the pads even though there is lots of pad left.... So that's what I did. When I took it out for a test drive it felt like I was trying to drive with the e brake on, thus the wheels got realy hot after a 5 min test drive. My question why is this happening?? My replacement procedure was just remove the wheel, take off the calipur, removed pads, depressed piston, then inserted new pads and put calipur back on, wheel, etc. I only did front brakes.
Thanks for any help.

Re: brakes grabby and hot

It sounds like the caliper pistons are meeting resistance and causing the pad to drag against the rotor.

Re: brakes grabby and hot

It could be a seized/sticky caliper piston. It's the mechanism that pushes the pads into the rotors.

Re: brakes grabby and hot

Are the slide pins greased and working properly?

Could be the calipers.

Could try caliper overhaul. But best to just replace whole caliper.

When was the last time brake fluid was changed if ever?

Dirty brake fluid collects moisture, moisture casues rust inside the calipers and they lock up/have resistance.

SOMETIMES just bleeding the brakes will solve the problem.

Re: brakes grabby and hot

depending on how hard you brake, it IS suppose to get hot...

after a few hard stops i cant even touch my discs without burning my hand.

it also depends on the type of brake pad material and/or brand you use.
