Whats up guys. I am new to the thread so bare with me.

I just bought myself a brand new set of 17x7.4 4x100 40mm offset Proline Alloy rims, an offer that i could not refuse. I am looking to put the rims on my 03 Honda Civic. The car is not lower or tampered with, everything is stock.(and i wont be tapering with it, don't have the $$$$)

What i would like to know is if there is going to be any rubbing problems. If so please let me know. And post pictures if anyone has a similar setup.

^Put the same size rims on as i am going to put on, however the tires he has on is 205/45/17. Is that a big difference between 205/50/17 and 205/45/17?

Neither size will rub at stock height.

If you lower it the 205/50R17s would be very close to rubbing

That size ate my fender linings.. Then again, I am lowered about 2"

why are u running 205/50/17?

205/45/17 would be the correct size (or a close size to stock anyways)

actually, since u are running a 7.5" width, you will prob have a lot of tire stretch, so ur tire profile will prob be closer to stock

they will be fine at stock height. thats what i run. and to the guy saying 205/45-17 is the proper size, you are wrong, 215/45-17 is the proper size, 205/50-17 is pretty close to the 215/45-17. most people run 205/40-17 to get the lowe profile look, personally i hated when i had that low profile on my car, rims got destroyed wicked easily and you felt every little bump

Why i am i running 205/50/17?

because like hondarider102 said, you will feel ever little bump, and the 205/50/17 seems overall a better choice then 205/45/17..

What would you guys do in my situation? I am leaning toward the 205/45/17 though. would you guys go bigger, like a 215/45/17.

Or will the 215/45/17 cause rubbling problems? (just looking at the best possible choice that will not cause any problems with rubbling or damaging the car)

I've been running 215/45-17's ever since I put on my 17" rims, except for the time I needed to get tires that could handle WA state snow, and the only size they had for those tires were 205/50's. As soon as I moved back to Vegas, and my tires needed replacing anyways, I went back to 215/45-17s and got some new fenderwell liners.

Oddly enough, the 215/45 Nitto NeoGens I had when I lived in upstate NY during the winter got me around with zero issues.

tl;dr
I haven't had any "rubbing issues," per se, just 205/50s eating up my fenderwell liners. My 215/45s play nice and leave the fenderwell liners alone.

is that because you are lowered 2"? So if i chose to go with 205/50/17 at stock height, which is what i am leaning towards, will i rub my fender liners? what do you think?

Because if what MindBomber said is right, neither 205/45/17 vs 205/50/17 will rub at stock height, then i should be fine with 205/50/17.

looks like we have a another ill informed troll on board.

the stock size for a 2001-2003 civic EX is 185/65/15, respectively.
205/45/17 would run him .8% too fast
205/50/17 would run him 2.5% too slow.

if he has a 04-05 ex, the stock tire size is 195/60/15
205/45/17 would run him .2% too fast
205/50/17 would run him 3.5% too slow


if you are running a 215/45/17, you 1.7% too slow




205 and 215 are the width of the tire, it doesnt have anything (to a certain degree) to do with "proper size" if u get the correct aspect ratio.

205/50-17 and 215/45-17 are still 1.8% off (for whatever this matters)



i bet you have a pretty large scientific sample size and data sheet to back up this statement... just saying

let me put out a few things you might wanna consider Wes:

1. no one buys 17" rims for "comfort." if u wanted comfort, you should have stuck with rims no bigger than 16"

with that said, i am wrapped in 215/40/17 and it isnt that bad. its not as "smooth" as my 195/60/15 touring tires, but is is almost the same ride quality as when i had my 205/45/16 setup.

2. the PROPER size for your tires is 205/45/17 or if u want to run wider tires (which you might rub), you can either run 215/40/17 (1.7% off, faster) or 215/45/17 (1.8% off, slower).

3. you may or may not rub. it depends on the width of your tire (205 or 215) AND it depends on the offset of your rims.

the offset is a KEY variable that most people over look.

so, here are my .02 on what you should get.

if u want to play it safe, i would suggest you get a 205 width tire.

the correct aspect ratio (as i mentioned earlier) is 45 as in 205/45/17.

however (this is key), BECAUSE you have 7.5" rim width, you will experience tire strech, making your tires a bit smaller than its suppose to be.

so if you in fact get 205/50/17, it will even it out a little it with the extra length on the aspect ratio.



this is what tire stretch is. obvious these are more extreme cases, but you get the idea.

but the bottom line is, you will be ok with 205/45/17 or 205/50/17.

so dont trip like its the end of the world. the 205/45/17 is more readily available than the 205/50/17 so you might want to factor in that consideration in your decision

What you said in your post is true, i do want to play it safe, so i will go with the 205/50/17.(dont want rubbing issues!)
