Price check for repairs
Price check for repairs
I tried out a new repair shop, and I'd like to ask your opinion on the price of a repair job.
Labor:
Front brakes: new brake pads installed and rotors resurfaced
Front left: wheel bearing replaced
Rotate and balance 4 tires
Parts: two front brake pads, one front wheel bearing
Cost:
Parts: $170.00
Labor: $337.00
Total: $507.00
Does that sound about right for Stamford, CT? Plus tax and Hazmat, of course. I like the shop, they're very accommodating, but business is business.
Thumbs up or thumbs down is all I need. Much obliged!

Re: Price check for repairs
front pads are super easy and $250 would be pushing it at an expensive shop. the pads themselves for really good ones like oem are no more than $40. maybe another 150 for labor. rotate and balance maybe $80 tops. now if they were doing the rear drums, yeah the price is almost fair. if you really like the shop and trust their ability, maybe its worth paying more than double for quality. but imo, way overpriced.

Hello Gearbox,
Thanks for the speedy reply. Can you give me any information on the front wheel bearing that was also replaced. I can see why you'd think that $507 was waaay too much for the brake pads and the rotation/balancing.

Re: Price check for repairs
Replacing the front wheel bearing is a lot of work, so I'd say that charged you a totally fair rate. A great shop would have charged you a bit less since some of the parts removed for the wheel bearing and brakes are the same, but if the mechanics are paid peice work that's impossible, so don't hold it against the shop.
$200-300 to replace a wheel bearing with labour would be totally fair. Replacing it requires removing and disassembling the knuckle, which is what attaches the wheel to the axle. That's a big job, especially if it hasn't been removed in a long time or ever.
Most shops charge $150 to replace your front brake pads not including the rotors, add resurfacing the rotos and $200 is a fair price for that.
The wheel balancing should be between $80-100.

Re: Price check for repairs
Not too bad, but for that price, you maybe coulda walked away with 2 bearings done instead of one
Pads I say can average about $50 a pair, and I hear pepboys does resurfacing for $15 a rotor? (and since we only have 2....)
But typical brake job is $150~250 depending on shops.

Re: Price check for repairs
i totally missed the wheel bearing part which is at least few more hrs of work so overall not a terrible price.
Re: Price check for repairs
Many thanks to all. I appreciate the quick responses.
I'll ask the shop to check the brake pad prices: "Is is possible that I was charged for 2 PAIR of pads instead of just plain 2 pads?" and see what they say. Good to know that the price is in the ballpark. It's a real drag to know that you've been gouged. Other than that, my 2001 LX is still a very good ride, especially at $4.25/gal. Geez!
Here's wishing you well with your 7th generation!
