Broke off a lug, help!

I was in the middle of rotating my tires and when I was taking off my front driver wheel, when I snapped the last lug. So can someone tell me what to do now? If I replace it, what part # do I buy and is it possible to install it myself? Is it safe to drive with only 3 lug nuts fastened? Thanks for any help.

that sucks. i wouldnt suggest driving with 3 lugs on only a 4 lug wheel. if it was a 5 or 6 it would be ok for a very short drive. you can do this yourself. youre going to have to go to the dealer and get the stud. i doubt autozone stocks any yet. i dont know the part # and im too lazy to look it up. last stud i replaced you had to pull all brake components off including the dust shield, whack that bitch out with a hammer, slide the new one in from the rear, get a nut that fits the stud, not the lugnut because it will bottom out, and tighten the **** out of the nut until the stud is seated completely. do not over tighten or youll be in the same boat youre in now. the stud i replaced was on a toyota corolla. civic might be a little different. someone correct me if this procedure it wrong.

advance auto parts sells extra studs, i believe they are like $1-2/each

you have to get them pressed out and in, you can DIY, it'll take some elbow grease.

sounds about right, but you risk stripping the new stud.

you shouldnt have to have it pressed. few good whacks with a sizable hammer and youll be good to go. if you drive it too far with only 3 lugs youre gonna warp the rotor if its on the front and you do a bit of braking. the problem youre going to have with pepboys or another shop is theyre going to charge you for every component they have to remove and reinstall. if you dont mind paying, take it to them papboys and theyll fix it right up. take some **** lube with you. i used to work for pepboys. they put the long weiner to a lot of people.

take it to a brake or tire place, theyll do it for 20 bucks. Its safe to drive with 3 lugs, same thing happened to me and i didnt get it fixed until i got my tires changed, luckily the tire place replace the stud and gave me a new lug nut free no charge. Also, try searching next time, i actually already had a thread with this same topic...

20 bucks seems a little high to me for 1 stud. but i do all my work myself. that 20 bucks i would save would buy a case of beer and a pizza.

Here's a DIY from honda-tech which I hope will help you

1/2" ratchet
3/4" deep socket
10-12 washers(Lowes, home depot, etc)
12x1.5 open end lugnut(set of 4 at Pep boys-2.99)

Process-

Hammer out old studs.

Feed ARP studs through backside of hub

Drop washers over stud, and thread on the open ended lugnut

Should look like this-

Here is the part that will require alot of muscle

Use ratchet and socket to pull stud through, using a vice to hold hub would be very helpful, I did not use a vice.

I pulled each stud through as much as possible by hand(holding hub in hand and threading nut)

Once all were as far as possible I used my foot on 2 studs(hub on ground sideways as I step on 2 studs) as I pulled the other 2 all the way through, then flip the hub and do the other 2 studs the same way.

End product should look like this-

I will also have a writup on pulling new wheel bearings into the knuckle and also the hub without using a press in a few weeks.

Hope some find this helpful, if not usually runs about 5.00 per stud to press in.

for those of you who have never done this on the front of a new honda, its not a hit it and knock it out and install a new one. you will see you have no room to knock it out. you have to remove the hub in order to replace the studs. the rear studs can be knocked out without removing anything. A shop will usually charge between $50-$100. I have had my fronts done a few times and each time it was $75. I only had a shop do it cause I was never around air tools. Yea its expensive for 1 stud but the labor involved is why it costs that. its about an hour job. for an experienced tech its about 30 minutes.

i recommend taking it to a shop but they charge more than $20 ... this just happened to one of my buds recently, the studs can be found at auto zone for like $3 but the hardest part is removing the main axle nut (24mm or something like that) its torqued way over 200 lbs. so if you have air tools go do it .. there is a detailed diy on this site ... but if you don't have air tools it'll be so difficult to do it, just suck it up and take it to a shop

its not only the fact that the nut is on there so tight, the hub doesnt just fall out. it needs to be pressed out. yea with some special tools it can be done, but if you dont have them, its easier to have a shop do it.

not sure where this neg rep thing came from. I didn't give any negative rep to anyone. I appreciate all the help everyone has provided.

The hub HAS to be pressed out to replace the front studs on our cars.. I've had to do this. You can try an axle puller and a slide hammer, but I had to us a 12-ton press on mine. There used to be a DIY on here, but I don't know if it is still here after the changeover.
