17" tires not performing well in snow/ice
17" tires not performing well in snow/ice
I'm curious to why I slip and slide in ice and snow. I have 17" wheels on my civic with Nanking (sp?) tires. I thought they are all seasonal tires but now I think that they are not. Do you think it's a problem with the size of the tires, or just the tires themselves? I hate swapping them out every winter.
well for one thing....i have yet to see a Nankang all-season tire in 17"....i have them on my car and that is the main reason i keep my stock wheels around...that and you never know when you might get a flat....
hard tire compound and shallow tread does not provide for a very good cold weather tire. the hard tire gets even harder in the cold and the shallow tread gives very little grip on icy/snow-covered roads. you'd be much better off putting some all-season or winter tires on your stockers and just switching 'em out. it doesn't take that long, and sacrifices must be made to look good

you are better off switching your tires for the winter. the bigger tread area of the 17's is what's killin you in the snow. smaller thinner tires actually gives you more grip than big fat(wide) tires. I had all season 17's and couldn't get anywhere even in just a dusting of snow. I stepped down to 16" winter tires and was getting through everything even handled 12" of snow with little problems. (tires are dunlop wintersport M3's)

im not gonna laugh at you but i am going to ask one thing.. the name of the tire is in my signature and the model is ZIEX512.. i live in northwestern NJ and we have some pretty bad winters. If anything if you still have the stock steelies put winter tires on those (BLIZZAKS)... i know.. falken doesnt make winter tires unless you want to stick on some Light Terrain Small SUV tires on there. and then throw on the Falken ST-115 on the Rims for the Summer.

Get Continental ContiExtremeContacts. They're actually meant to give grip in snow. And they do. I have a set. Great tire. True story.

Get a dedicated snow tire, and not all seasons. Keep your summer tires on your 17's, and get 15's steel rims. That's what I do. It takes like 10 mins to swap your tires. I do it every winter.
15 inch steel rims are super cheap, and 15 inch winter tires are not too expensive as well.
No such thing as a good winter in terms of performance?? LMAO. I guess you've never heard of bridgestone blizzaks?? how about Nokian tires?? ever heard of those??
There's no way an all season tire can perform better than a nokian winter tire, or blizzaks for that matter in the winter time. There's definetly no way the hydroedge or proxes 4 can perform better in the winter time either.
I can't believe you actual posted this. Proxes 4's for snow??
Proxes 4's are in the all season category, but their more like a summer tire. I've had these tires before, and I've driven in light snow with them. When I mean light snow, I mean light. I was sliding everywhere with the one time I drove in snow with toyo proxes 4's. I've never felt more scared driving, than driving with proxes 4's in the snow. Dry, and wet, the proxes 4's perform well, but not in snow.
Driving on proxes 4's in the winter is like asking for a death wish.
