Sizing Opinion/Question

So I'm ordering wheels and tires. First off, I just want to make sure 225/50 16's will fit nicely on a 7th Gen. Secondly, since I'm going to be using these for auto-x, I think I should just pay the extra 30 bucks or so for 225 as opposed to the 205/50's they come with. What do you guys think? Stick 205/50 or pay a little more for 225/50's?

Well, 225/50 will be fatter so more grip. Question is whether 225/50/16 will fit (I don't know, somebody might) and do you want your speedo off since the 225/50 will be slightly bigger than stock or up size 1 (205/50/16).

225/50 is actually BIGGER than stock diameter tires. Thats not necessarily good as it makes a slow car accelerate slower. 205/50/16 would be a better option. IF these are for autoX use only, 205/50/15 would be a wise move, however the Hankook Z212 is available in a 225/45/16.

Well its a realatively light rim. Also, I saw on Grass Roots where they compaired 14's 15's 16's and 17's, and between them, the 16's yeilded the best times. I guess I have some thinking to do. If I go with the 15's, its more expensive, and less width. I still think the 16's are what I want.

Also, these are for race day only. So I dont care that the speedo is off. Thanks for the help.

225 45 16 is the size you want, its slightly smaller in diameter than your stockies and 225 50 16 will rub your fender if your lowered.

First question is, on what car?

Anyways, a 7" rim is a 7" rim, be it 15 or 16"
second, did they test the 205/40/16 falkens?
That seemed to be a hot option this year, because its even shorter than a 205/50/15, but it doesn't necessarily hold true for all 16" options, of which there are VERY few.
The other thing is that all the autoX worthy tires are wider than the claimed size. 205 MXs and Azenis tend to measure in the 220s.
Its a black art. There is no right answer unfortunately.

Thats the site with the article. If you look at the averages it's easier to decipher.
From a financial aspect, these are my options:

15x6.5 Flik Blast Black
11.9lb
w/Dunlop Direzza Dz101
205/50R15 19.4lb

Or

16x7 Flik FTD Black
16lb
w/Hankook Radial 106K
205/50R16 or 225/50R16

The 15's were my first choice, and I am really leaning towards them right now. The 15's are in the stlye of Rota Slipstreams, and the FTD's are in the style of Gram Lights, just a little fatter. Theres a thirty dollar difference, and that is what fits my budget. Since this is my first year doing Auto-X, I'm not overly concerned with having purebreed race tires. Thanks guys!

Key point of advice. Don't buy anything if you've never done it. Use the shittiest tires you can get (All seasons). It'll make you learn to drive.

The largest glaring problem with the Grassroots test.... They changed tire compound between their "control" setup and their Plus setups. after that the biggest flaw would be running soft walled street tires With probably the OEM tire PSI...

Basically all that test tells you is that if you replace flexible rubber with relitivly unflexable metal the car responds quicker, and if you replace a hard compound with a soft compound the tire turns better. Woo hoo... Not really helpfull for compitition because the modern tires used for compitition not only have stiff side walls (making a larger wheel un-nessisary) but the also have very soft compounds. So, Larger wheels make make a Daily driver with "street" tires handle a bit better, but your better off with running the proper tires on a small wheel for compitition. my $.02
