215/45-17: 7" or 7.5" rim width?

i've seen a lot of people running 215/45 tire size with 7" and 7.5" wide rims. since i'm about to purchase some lightweight 17"s for my car, i'm curious which rim width is more appropriate for a 215/45 setup.... that bullshit with the thin *** tires and rim-lips stickin out past the tire width looks like A1 gone south.

anybody got math/science on this one?

It doesn't matter. There's enough variation in the treadblock width that it never measures 215 anyways.

Go for 17x7's cause some tires warn you not to put it on 17x7.5 rims. I don't know why.

They warn you to not use 17.5" rims.
There's nothing warning you against any given width.

since you're not changing tire width, but rim width, i would say that it doesn't really matter, but i've had 215 and 205 on a 7 in rim before, and there really isn't that much diff in the width...at least not to my naked eyes

just my .02

from the research i did recently, on huge horsepower k20 turbos in our civics, 205/40/17 tires on 7" width rims or 215/40/17 tires on 7.5" width rims seemed to be the most used setup. i was lookin at 400hp and over 7th gen civics.

Umm with 400 HP, I'd be looking at wider fenders and a way to stick 255s under there. 205 or 215 doesn't stand a chance with much more than 250 HP.

i have subzeros that are 7.5" or 8" wide

with the 205/40/17 tires the lip would be easily susceptable to curb damage cuz it sticks out more than the tire, but now the tire sticks out more than the rim

quick question. my 215/45/17 tires look like they are huge and belong on a truck, has anyone experienced rubbing with this size tire and a 1.8" drop?

Just thought I'd go ahead and throw my question in here too. I currently have 205/40/17 tires on my wheels. I am in the market for a new set of tires. I would prefer to go 215/40/17 because of less exposure for the lips of my wheels. I am dropped probably around 1.7" on Teins. Does anyone know how likely the 215's would rub compared to my 205's? I know it's probably a vague question. Thanks!

you got more than 1/4" clearance? if you do, then they won't rub.

By clearance, do you mean wheel gap?

225/45s would be ideal... but 215/45s are ok too... it'll just expose the lip slitely more but not noticable...

Just putting this bit out there. I am riding on Koni Yellows w/ Neuspeed red/race springs. My wheels are Buddy Club PII's that are 17x7.5" with 215x45x17 Yokohama AVS Sports and I have not had any problems.

However I am in the begining stages of doing the 5 lug conversion w/ disc's and I am wondering if I am going to have iany ssues with 18 x 8" wheels that have a +36 offset w/ 215x40x18's?
