What do I lose by going with 18s?

Hey guys, just debating on whether to go with 17s or 18s. This will just be a street car, so performance isn't huge, but I do want the ride to be decent. Anyway, I will probably be going with some Eibach Sportlines, so I was wondering what people thought would be better, 17s or 18s? Thanks!

Ride quality will drop, so will acceleration and a bit of braking....

You will lose money

I had Heavy 17inch Audi TT 6 spoke rims on my old GTI VR6 and HOLY CRAP!!! Accelaration was crap and I had to clean the rims everyday due excess amounts of brake dust. My kidneys also took a beating riding on 205/40/17 ZR tires over crappy roads and pot hole highways......

If this is your daily car, i advice against it for the sake of comfort.

Thanks for the replies guys ... slowstockcivic, what did you have suspension wise? The wheels will be Racing Hart C5s ... yes this is my daily driver and comfort is an issue, but aren't there suspension options that can help this? Thanks again!

i got 18s with neuspeed sports springs and stock struts (Tokicos going on in less than 2 weeks) and it feels fine. I have a 35 series tire...so yeah its bumpy, but ive most definitely ridden in a LOT worse. my friend use to have a Del Sol riding on 17s and it was like a damn dune buggy it was soo bouncy.

really, the ride isn't that bad on 18s. just do it right, upgrade suspension not just springs!

Hey guys, thanks again for the replies ... I have definitely decided to go with 18s, mainly because I got a good deal on them (5 RH C5 wheels for $600 + ship) ... anyway, I think I've also chosen to go with an Eibach prokit and KYB AGX setup (<- wait, are those even available for an 04 sedan?). As far as tires go, any suggestions? I really don't want a 35 series tire, not enough rubber for me ... do you think a 40 will be fine? Say, 215/40-18? A little worried about rubbing there ... thoughts? Thanks!

well, if youre set of 18s, go for it. but i agree w/ what zzyx said. you will definitely lose acceleration, you WILL notice it. and it doesnt matter if this is just a street car, im assuming you still merge on the highway. also, you will feel a lot more bumps on the road. especially if you have stock suspension or just springs. aftermarket shocks might make it more comfortable, but it will still be a somewhat rougher ride compared to stock wheels.

i had 17s w/ neuspeed sport springs and my CD player would skip at nothing. but if you can live with that, then go for it.

curiousfish ... i believe you are right, and i am aware of that ... would some simple bolt on performance parts help with the acceleration? say aem intake and cat back exhaust? like i said it's just a street car, but i would like to try to keep the same performance (as little as it may be.) Anyway, thanks again for the replies, i really appreciate all the information!

When I put my 18"s on I noticed a slow down, but I think it was because the rims are so damn heavy (Motegi rt5)
