Question Plus sizing

I read the "article" about plus sizing on the "Tire Calculator". It talked about plus sizing being a good way to achieve better performance because of having a larger footprint. The article mentioned going up to a 17x8. How about an 18x8? Does anyone know if these rims will work? Is anyone running 18x8s? I am looking to buy a new set of rims, and if 18x8s will fit correctly then I want to go with those so I could get some tires that are like 245/40-18.

Better performance? in what? handling? acceleration?

Handling performance.... Sure a larger wheel can help there as your replacing flexible rubber with relitivly unflexable metal, when your running soft walled street tires. once you get in to stiff walled performance tires, Your better off running a smaller wheel, for reasons noted below.

Acceleration performance... Higher rotational Inertia = Slower acceleration and increased stopping distances.

For wheel Width... Yes, you should be running as wide of a wheel as you can fit.

Tire sizes... depends, the wider you go the better handling performance you'll get, but the car will track more (it will be influenced by the road imperfections more). You'll also be increasing drag, which will hinder acceleration, but you ushually more then make up for it by increased cornering speeds.

But any way, on our civics, if you are looking for maximum performance you shouldnt be looking at any thing bigger then a 15x7 (15x7.5 if you can get the right back spacing) you could probably get away with a 16 or 17 if you didnt mind the slower acceleration, or if you were running a softer sidewalled tire. Personally, I have a set of 17's that I use on the street, and a set of 15's for when I'm autocrossing. Best of both worlds, but the car is much more slugish with the 17's on it.

Thanks again for your feedback. The rims I am looking at would be for street / show purposes only. I am not too concerned with overall performance, other then them being fairly light.

The rims that I currently run for autocrossin are 15s (stock steelies). I am gonna get some SSR Comps (16s or 17s).

Regarding slow accelaration, I am doin the K20A2 swap along with I/RH/E/K-Pro and will making over 200whp. This should be plenty to overcome any "slight" drag issues.

Back to my original question: will 18x8s fit on our Vics?

i have buddyclub P1 racing II plus rims. 18 x 8. The offset is +43. I beleive that for it to fit without rubbing i need to use 215/35/18 tire.

I beleive the perfect offset for 18 x 8 is +45mm. Ask Riley!!

if its for street/show... Get what ever you want. and you should be able to fit an 18X8... I recall Riley running 19's at one time.

olytrojan is an unknown quantity at this point
18x8's will work with the right offset, +43 to +46 should be fine. if you do get the 8in wide you're going to want to get either a 225/35 or 225/40. i have 225/40's right now and don't have any problem front or rear
