Do I need to sand when Painting Drums?

Lemme say first of all, I did search. But all the painting stuff has been about the calipers, I found all those DIY's.

My drums are all rusted over, so i was thinking about painting them black/gunmetal. Drums dont need attention, i just hate the rust look. So my questions are:

1) How do I clean the drums? Do I need to sand my drums first to get rid of the rust?
2) Is Primer needed? If so what kind?
3) Are there any areas of the drums that i need to mask off? Pix are helpful.
4) What brand of paint? VHT or Plasti-Kote or other?

Thanks!

I would sand it. Probably just use some 400 grit paper just to make sure there are no inperfections or loose rust/metal/paint flakes that would make the paint job look bad.

1) Use some alcohol, acetone, or some sort of grease removing solvent so that the paint will be able to bond with the surface.

2) I would use primer just so that I could make sure the paint would bond with the primer instead of wondering if the paint will bond with the metal.

3) You only want to mask off all around the inner wheel, your car (for over spray protection) and the suspension and links behind the drum. Basically just mask off anywhere you don't want paint. Don't worry about the studs, they'll be covered by the wheel and the lugs.

4) Can't answer that one. There's quite a few to choose from.
