i think it's because of the lip that you see...on those first rims in the picture...the silver ones, they don't have a lip, the spokes go all the way out to the tire...on the black with polished lip, the lip takes away from the spokes, so it makes it seem smaller....

the drop can make the rims look bigger too. now that my neuspeed race springs have settle in since that pic im just about tucking in the rear with less than a 1/2 finger gap.
