195/60/15 vs 205/55/15

im debating on which size tires to purchase for my si rims (03 ex alloys). im currently riding on firestones which are horrible. the designer should be shot for it. but i use my civic for daily driving to go to school, places, get around and never go on long trips with my car. im no big fan of autocross, drag racing, track racing, etc with my car, i want a set of tires that are much much better then stock ones. i live in california where its pretty dry and sunny but rains in the winter, doesnt snow but hard rain. hail barely happen but im still leaning towards an all-season performance tire. i heard good stories with falken zien 512 but are their better ones out their from what im looking for? im worrying more about the treadlife of the tire and least important would be the noise issue.

so i want to ask whats the comparsion between 195/60/15 and 205/55/15 when it comes to tire sizing?

secondly, what kind of tires would you recommend? and why?

my stock size is 185/65/R15 86H, affordabilty is a must. i dont drive hard and make crazy turns, i want something that beats these dam firestones. kinda like a upgrade to the next level

any suggestions/help/input/facts are welcome

Thanks,
Tommy

Im in the same boat and after reading all these tire size threads Im also torn between these 2 sizes. The 195/60 is closest to stock and 205 /55 is like 2% faster but I do want wider so I dont know. I also want all season and heard nothing but good stuff for Falken 512 and buy it from Vulcantire.com for good prices. But also would like to hear of any comparable all season tires.

The 195/60/15 will cost way less than the 205/55/15. The 55 series prices are always very high. I have a set of 4 falken ziex ze512 tires for $160 set of 4. The 205/55/15 falken will run you $250 a set of 4.

ok i was in the same situation.........if u compare these too size with the same KIND OF TIRE.....then 205/55/15 is better....cuz its wider, more tread on the ground.

BUT if ya lookin at many many kinds of tires.....this guy at JUSTTIRES told me this.....some 195/60/15...can have more tread then 205/55/15....depends on the tire u buy.

so i went with 205/55/15 falken 512s...cuz i like to sit wide

The width rating (185,195,205mm) is of the outside of the tire, not the tread. So, not all 205s have the same contact patch, he's right. But, it's usually very minimal differences. The compound and cord design you should worry about more.
Wider is better to a point, then you compromise sidewall strength. Don't go too wide on a tiny 6" rim, unless you're only driving in a straight line.
