Why am i having trouble with caliper pins?

I changed my pads for the first time, on my 2002 civic. The caliper sliding pins are different. One has a little rubber bushing, and the other does not. When I cleaned up everything, and put grease, I had a HELL of a time installing the pins in, they would just keep popping out! For 2 hours I tried and tried, and finally forced them on. I am using a synthetic green sliding pin grease. Maybe it is too thick? Its like there is an air pocket that can't escape, and allow the pin to go in all the way. Also, do i have to put the one with the little rubber gasket on the left, or right side? Why? I am having trouble figuring out this little puzzle.

Any help would be great!
