i was using the tire calculator and i thought about something.....

the new speedometer is gonna be wrong and i understand that... the question is, what effect will new wheels and tire size have on the odometer?

the odometer and the speedo are linked

distance traveled is measured based on the speed you are traveling at, thus if your speedo is gooing too fast you milage will not be accurate. In other words you are putting miles on your car that were not really traveled.

Or you are putting more miles on your car that weren't travelled. Use the tire calculator to tell you how much your speedo/odo will be off.

i figured that would be the case. so a slower speedo would mean a slower odo and vice versa? or are they inversly proportional? slower speedo = faster odo?

on the other hand, a mile is a mile, no matter how fast or slow youre going, i dont think they are linked, if they were, it would be illegal to get a tire of any size other than specified by the manufacturer. it would be the same principle as the cliche of the snake used car dealer that put a drill on the odo's of all his cars and turned back the mileage

uhh... if you don't get the proper tire size, your odometer and speedmeter will both be off. I don't about any laws about this, but I guess there should be one, but there's not. a mile is not a mile if u got different tire sizes. The car is doesn't have a brain that says "let's adjust for this new tire size".

If you are gonna change to like 17" tires, I would go with 215/45/17. Its a little off, but I think it would be better to get wider tires. If you want the tires to match your odometer perfectly with 17's, it would be 205/45/17.

What tire size are u thinking of upgrading to??

im strongly considering movin on up to 18's i think the closest is 215 40 18 or something like that

i thought about it... its directly proportional unless the car uses another method to measure mileage in which case wouldnt make a difference.

^^ thats right, directly proportional. Let me tell you guys and story about my cab ride when I was in China. I was tarveling with a bunch of relatives, took 2 cabs. Both cabs driving the same speeds, same path. But the cab that I was in ended up being $2 more (thats in China $, close to 20 cents but thats beside the point). When I found out about the price differences, I noticed the front tires were smaller. WHat does that tell you?
