On 16s both tires are on the pretty small side. I thought the point of 16's was to get a little cushion. maybe 205/50s, which is pretty close to stock and should give a little bit of tire. Its a pretty common size, I would assume all the major tires are available.
The 205/40's would be too small in diameter AND have not enough sidewall to cushion your wheels.
Your profile says you had 205/50-15's, so you could go with the 205/45-16's:
IF you liked the way your 205/50-15's filled your wheel wells, because they are very close in overall diameter (if you think the 15's looked too small, or if you think there is gap to fill, go with 205/50-16's)
IF you can live with the drawbacks that go with the shorter sidewall of the 205/45-16
(it is 4/10" shorter than the 205/50-16, so you get the slightly harsher ride + less protection for your rims)
Did that make sense?
Your choice is between 205/45-16 (essentially a "plus 1" size for the tire your profile says you now have - with the drawbacks listed above) and 205/50-16 (a tire that is close to factory diameter and gives ~4" of sidewall for cushioning your rims)
