drag radials

I was wondering what drag radials were exactly, i'm confused cuz i've heard them called slicks and street tires? so if i were to set up a race with someone and say i would use street tires then use drag radials...would that be alright. And since i'm on the subj of settin up races...what does it mean when someone says, "gimme the move"...is that just givign them some space instead of going heads up?

Drag Radials and Slicks are the same thing i belive. If you were to set up a race on street tires you couldn't use a drag radial. It would defeat the purpose. And the only thing i could think "give me the move" would mean is that the person who says it wants to start the race with three honks or whatever if there's no flagman.

Slicks are purely a racing tire with a super-soft sticky compound that is made to become even stickier when you do a burnout to heat them up. The sidewall is very thin so it can "wrinkle" and let the contact patch grab the pavement as much as possible. The problem with drag slicks is that they are slick -- the combination of no tread & thin sidewall makes them illegal for street use.

That's when BFGoodrich (and later Nitto) brought out D.O.T. legal drag radials to help street & weekend racers get an advantage over regular radial tires. They have a tread pattern so you can drive them on the street & not go flying off the road when it rains, but they have a much stickier tread compound to help with traction during drag launch. (This also means they don't last very long--normally the softer the compound, the faster the tire wears out)

Edit
So instead of saying the rule is "no slicks" I just would say that the rule is "tires have to be street legal"
