99 Civic overheat

I own a 1999 honda Civic EX and have been having overheating problems since February. I've replaced the themostat, most hoses, the radiator, the water pump, timing belt, and the head gasket. The coolant has been at the same level for the past few months, but yesterday I was driving in from Houston to Galveston and noticed my car was extremely slugish. To the point where I had to basically floor it to get good speed. After a while I noticed the gauge was starting to rise. It mostly happened when I was either slowing down or in idle. I have no idea what this could be.

Re: 99 Civic overheat

I drove it for about 20 minutes the day after and checked the fans. The fans were both working but the car didn't overheat.

Re: 99 Civic overheat

on hot days and slow traffic it's not uncommon for dash temp needle to raise between half and almost 3/4.
radiator fans can be slow to engage sometimes.
What you described in your initial post is probably not that concerning unless it keeps happening or it starts to lose coolant.

What procedure did you use to bleed air from the coolant system when you did the other repairs?

kept the radiator cap off when running and filled it up more when the coolant started to go down. Did that until it was full.

I'm not aware of the nose being elevated, I mean possibly. The suspension loves bouncing so the nose could have jumped up when I started accelerating

Re: 99 Civic overheat

1) Raise front of car on jacks (or incline hill) as high as possible (radiator cap/neck higher than top of engine)
2) set interior climate control to max heat and fan off
3) bleed (from cold start) with radiator cap off at idle until radiator fan engages or no more bubbles are seen. Fill radiator and reservoir as needed during bleed procedure.
4) after bleeding air from system turnoff the engine and let it fully cool. While engine is cold check the coolant levels in radiator and reservoir, too up as needed.
5) Check coolant levels everyday for a week to ensure no coolant loss.

Improper bleeding of air from the coolant system can lead to overheating, rough idle, erratic cabin heat via climate control.

No when bleeding the coolant you need to have the nose elevated to help get the bubbles out

Take 30 minutes to do it right or keep it as is and possibly problems arise?
