Sorta rough idle when first started in morning

Anyone else have this problem?

When I first start up my car from sitting overnight, the idle is kinda rough and it stumbles here and there. Now I know that its suppose to idle higher since its cold, but the stumbling make me a little worried. When it does stumble, its not like its gonna stall out or anything but you can feel it jerk.

After it reaches operating temp, it idles fine. But I'm still curious if others have this sorta problem also.. thanks.

Mine idles kinda rough too.. the car kinda shakes a bit, i can notice it in the mirrors..

But I have noticed that every time that it "shakes", the rpms drop a bit.. so I think it's just caused by the ECU lowering the rpms as the engine warms up...

(btw i'm not too knowlegable with cars, so I just assume the ECU controls the idle speed )

So I guess I'm not the only one then.. not very encouraging at the moment.. grr.

Malice29r- I agree, sounds like the TPS adjusting from the ECU is telling it to do But damn.. I was kinda hoping it would be a smoother drop..

iluvbritney- its about 1100 rpms at first, then slowly drops(like it should) as it gets warmer. At full operating temp, I sit at ~750 rpms.

Hi flotsamm,
How many miles on your car ?
It could be a fouled plug.
IMO -- No matter how well they make spark-plugs
I don`t think they`ll last as long as they say.
Just a thought. Also how about your gas?
I run 91oct , even though the book and others say
that I don`t have to , just fell better running better gas.

I'm running denso iridium ik20 and still get that rough shaking... i thought it was the oil at first, but that was incorrect.

Hi,

I have just over 9000 miles on my '02 coupe... plugs are most likely fine. Once its warmed up, it idles fine. So I think it might just be the TPS(throttle position sensor) adjusting the idle, but in a rough way. Not sure if 91 octane would help me, though I guess its worth a try. I run Chevron mid-grade 89 octane right now.

Hi flotsamm,
9K, It sounds like the plugs should be A-OK !
If you drive in alot of traffic maybe your injectors
are cloged.
My 03 Civic doesn`t have enough miles on it to be
any real help, But my old Honda Accord would run ruff
if I did too much city driving. What I used to do is just
take it on the highway and run it for a while in 3rd (auto trany)
most of the time that worked. I didn`t red-line but around
4K and just drive for a few miles should be enough is see
if it works.
I`m sure it`s nothing too major could be as
simple as slight carbon build-up to a bad batch of gas.
If it doesn`t clear up I would take it back it the dealer.
I`m not a big fan of dealerships , but sometimes you
have to. Best of luck

Thanks Jedi, good thinking! But unfortunately its a daily driver that see's maybe 2 miles a day of stop and go. The rest is a 60 mile round trip commute.. thanks again though, appreciate your input.

Nah, I think it's fine. I was worried about that too, and now I'm almost at 30K miles and it still idles roughly when I start it. Trust me, I look at my engine and the thing looks like it's just gonna explode on me. But after a while, it idles fine and runs great.

ya sometimes when I start up my car in the morning and it seems to be idling roughly but after letting it sit for a little while it seems to go away after the engine has warmed up enough. I think it might be just a weather/temperature factor because when i start it up during the summer I dont notice as much rough shaking or vibrations.
