Rep Power: 401 Search this... it's been beaten to death
The cluster only stores the miles recorded while it is plugged in. The ECU actually keeps track of the miles on the car. If you remove the cluster, and it says 11000 miles, then 10 years from now if you go to trade the car and swap the original cluster back in, it will still say 11000, someone will check the computer and know the milage is not accurate. Best thing to do is get an LX cluster from a car that has more miles than you have now, when you get to the milage put in the new cluster. That way, you're still accurate and no one can raise a fuss. When you get rid of the car, you'll have to leave the swapped cluster in the car. But no matter what, the car loses value because you don't have the original odometer reading. Why not just get a small aftermarket tach and mount it someplace not very obvious (not a ricer 5" tach, they make 2-3" ones). I believe 'Bellz' mounted one in the bezel in front of the cluster in his car and it looks very good. Search for threads on Tachometers in DX models and you should find it.
