The only knocking sound I know of is when an engine doesn't have oil.... what do you mean around the "valve cover area"?

If you're refering to the light "ticking" noise from under the valve cover, its normal. A knocking sound isn't normal on any gas engine on any make of car.

I get the knocking too. It's the gas quality. Try putting like 91 of Chevron or 76 for a few weeks and you will hear it go away.

I use Chevron 87 and i hear a little knocking under slow acceleration.

I believe he is refering to the ticking noise he hears when the car is at idle and the hood is up. BTW I haven't heard anyone having problems with "valve knock" or "detination" wih 87 octance gas, you must have a few mods on your car and drive it hard.
