Poor Highway mileage - may dump Civic
Poor Highway mileage - may dump Civic
My city mileage results have always been disappointing, around 25-26 mpg, but I always thought that my Civic might make up for it on the highway. Unfortunately, my results do not measure up to what the averages that most people are getting here on this forum. A recent mileage test of about 85% highway 15 % non-highway resulted in 260 miles with 7.2 gal of gas used = 36 mpg. This was mostly flat highway at moderate speeds around 65 mph. Most mileage reports here are around 33- 42 mpg mixed highway city. My Civic seems to be unable to achieve this, and combined with the rattles is a subpar car. I will not be buying another Civic and consequently no more HONDA. Anything is better than a ripoff Honda. Blame me if you want for the poor mileage, for not maintaining it right, or whatever the opinions are, but I have never experienced rattles such as these in a car, and combined with all the hype about the fantastic mileage, which only exists for some but not all Civics, makes the Civic a lightweight dud.
How many miles does your car have?
When I bought my '02 EX 5spd in Dec. '02 I wasn't pleased with the gas mileage either. I don't drive it hard and I drive mostly highway miles, yet I was only getting about 28mpg-30mpg. Now that my car has 8,000 miles I have noticed that I am getting more like 32mpg-34mpg. I obviously would like to see higher numbers, but considering how economical our cars are I'm not too upset.
As far as the rattling in your Civic goes, its something you just have to live with as long as you own the car. Obviously, if you dump it the problems solved.
Aside from some of the annoyances that the 7th gen Civics have, just remember that they're still pretty damn good cars. They're economical, look nice, and have high resale value.
Good luck on whatever you decide to do with your Civic/"lightweight dud" and try and look at the good traits it does possess (you can think of some right??).

heres a possible solution. i drove from houston to austin on a full tank, then from austin to houston. total trip was 360 miles. i stop at a gas station to fill up and it only took 9.5 gallons to fill it back up, yet my gauge was on the last notch with the gas light showing. this equates to about 38 miles a gallon on nothing but highway driving, which is about right. the weird thing is why my gauge is so low when i only have 9.5 gallons used up. i did this test again on nothing but city driving and it averaged out to about 28mpg. but ofcourse i drive aggressively shifting normally at 3.5-4k rpms. hope this helps
The gas gauge in my EX seems to read differently than whats really in the tank. Once the tank is a little under halfway full the gauge drops quite drastically.
Our tanks hold 13.2 gal yet when I am on or just below the E and I put gas in it I can only fill it with maybe 11.5-12 gal at the most.
Just out of curiosity I decided to see how far I could go on a tank of gas (remember the Seinfeld episode with Kramer test driving the new Saab) driving 25%city/75%hwy miles. I drove it gently and was able to get 420 miles out of that tank of gas. Of course, I was literally running on fumes when I pulled into the gas station because it took nearly about 12.8 gal.
If you have a 5spd tranny try shifting at 2500rpms-3000rpms. This may seem low, but its much easier on your engine and you will get better gas mileage vs. accelerating hard and shifting at 3500rpms-4000rpms.
Right now I have driven 220 miles, after filling my tank up with 87, and the gauge is just below the halfway point. I am driving gently and hopefully I'll be able to get a little over 400 miles on this tank (how many cars can you think of that are comparable to ours and get this type of gas mileage?...maybe a Corolla).
The way gas prices are I can't afford to drive fast.

Ok, I admit I was a little harsh on the ol' Civic, after all it has been getting me back and forth on my 130 mile round trip commute, and at even 36 mpg, that isn't all that bad. I probably won't be dumping it anytime soon. But does it really have a high resale value? In other words, is there someone out there that would love my white '01 Civic LX Sedan more than me?
The civic has one of the highest resale values...... just look at what ppl
want for used ones I'm sure someone would buy it since it's fairly new,
looks the same as a new one, and would be cheaper. Also most of the rattles you
have can be fixed most of the time with a little felt or other materials placed in the
right areas

You have to keep in mind that the Civic is Honda's entry model(low end?) car line. Once you move up from the Civic line to say the Accord's, you'll see a more refined piece of work obviously. My wife's '02 Accord LX is waay less noisy and much more solid feeling. FWIW.

When my gas gauge is halfway it drops down more pretty quick. Plus when me or my mom put a half tank of gas in, it goes up to just about full and then drops down to halfway pretty quick. My mom got pissed cause she just put gas in and it was "Full" and then it was halfway haha. Whenever I fill it up, i get at least 150 miles before the needle is halfway. And Im pretty sure i can get over 300 miles in my car. Id prob get more if I didnt take the short trip of dropping my sister off at school and going back home, my mom picking up my dad from the trolley like 5 minutes away freeway driving, everyday that crap happens. When I go to school, its 20 miles there and back. Work is like 15 min away and only about 11 miles from my house. This s**t sucks now cause of the cost of gas and me making about 50 bucks every 2 weeks delivering hay. Id make more if i had more hours instead of like 4 hours a week. its a nice job though haha mess around while im working, and learning to drive stick. wooo hahaha funny stuff with that.
Yep I hear ya on crap gas mileage my civic was high 30's on highway but now I am lucky to get low 30's since I got rims. But just got my oil change I am thinking of throwing some chevron fuel injection cleaner in and maybe that will help out a little. But driving my moms 2002 envoy right now and talk about some horrible gas mileage I wish I was back to my civic. But yeah I remember the days I would get like 40 mpg on the highway when my car had under 10,000 on it.
Yeah love my civic but love the accord even more and plan on getting one after this ride gets high miles on it

36 MPG on the highway is very good, The most I got was 40 mpg on the highway but mostly average 35 to 37 mpg on the highway. I don't see any problem with the milage part of the car, but I agree that the rattles are a pain that just isn't acceptable.
I see you're from New England like I am. Unforunately, you can expect your Honda's gas mileage to suck during the wintertime. The cold weather and additives to gasoline up here kill the fuel economy on our engines for some reason. Over the summer I was getting a consistant 46mpg highway. Now I'm down to around 30mpg.
On a side note, I filled up in NJ with about 1:1 ratio CT/NJ gas. I got 35mpg on the ride home.
The most I've lost in the past was about 2mpg during the wintertime, and I was running a Ford 4.6L V8.

You are all lucky. Before I got any of the mods done on my car, I consistantly for like 9 months straight got 30. I commute 60 miles a day on freeway (some traffic but not bad). Im getting about 28 now with all of the mods I have on my car (which from I understand is somewhat normal). I do drive my car moderatly hard, not insanely though (hard to really drive an auto too hard).
I did not buy my car for just the gas mileage. At 28 its still better than most cars, and im happy with my car

My city mileage sucks big toe, but on the commute from my dorm to my parents house, lots of hills, sharp curves, doing about 80mph, 250 miles, I only use half a tank, something like 6 gallons i think.

But I have driven over 10 Accords was surprised - they seem to be built to a different standard. I could see myself in an Accord next time but no more Civics for me!
Re: Poor Highway mileage - may dump Civic
I think anyone claiming 40+ MPG is calculating their mileage incorrectly. I know of some people who think they can say "my Civic has a 13 gallon tank so when the guage is at 1/2, then there must be 6.5 gallons left..."
ummm, no. It doesn't work that way. The only way to get an accurate mileage reading is to FILL the tank, set your trip meter, drive it until a large portion (I'd recommend at least 75%) of that tank is gone, and then re-fill the tank AT THE SAME PUMP, and see how much was consumed.
I drive my 2002 EX rather lightly (pretty much never over 4000 RPM and usually between 2500-3000) and I get 35 across the board - in town or highway (mileage goes down from there over 65MPH)

Re: Poor Highway mileage - may dump Civic
When I was living in NYC, my 02 DX was getting 30-33mpg. In Las Vegas where I currently reside, I'm getting 38-42mpg. My record for longest distance traveled on a tank was 560 miles. I filled up 12 something gallons. I think maybe the previous fill up was over filled to the very top or something. Usually I get to 250 miles at a half tank and the gas light will come on about 420.
Living in NYC, it was very stop and go traffic. In Las Vegas, I'm mostly on the freeway. When I drive from Vegas to LA, my MPG is always about 35. Probably a combination of going up and down the mountain passes and doing 90mph.

Mayne.. I love my baby, i fill it up with 20 bucks everyweek and it lasts me for the whole weekend. I drive alot tho, last year i bought it with 78k now it has 93k, so i do drive alot because i go school.. And the reason, i bought this civic is because of gas mileage.. Now my 03 Acura CL-S is really bad on gas with the mods, My CL-S 6mt gets like 19 mph's a gallon in city and highway it gets 25 mph's a gallon.. I still have to pay 40-50 bucks to fill it up and the distance i drive everyday, it only lasts me like 3-4 days before another fill up, So now thats a bad mileage.. Rember when gas was over 3 dollars a gallon, i used to spend 60-80 bucks every 3-4 days.. And being a broke *** student, i cant afford that... Thats the reason i bought this lil dx, Now the CL-S is only a weekend car.. But, the thing is, i see mostly of u guys who are bitching are driving a automatic, thats why u cant reach ur 33 avarge and did yall do the tune up? Check the plugs, air filter.. I hate when people start complaining about something and they dont even do tune ups and stuff.. If u treat ur car the right way, its going treat u good back...
Now as rattling thing, Mayne get up and find out where its coming from and fix it... This car is not a 30k+ car come on now be real.. I been in cars like Benz s500 the big boy and it rattles. Dont even talk about neons and misturbushi's lol..
I am just saying i hate when people complain about lil stuff like this that can be fixed.. No offense.....

Re: Poor Highway mileage - may dump Civic
Which year is your car? Which kind of gas? Aftermarket air intake/exhaust? Loud stereo? Why would you buy Honda's cheapest econo-car and then use that as a defining factor for Honda quality? I drove about halfway across Canada for like $300, I think that's pretty good.

Re: Poor Highway mileage - may dump Civic
manual trans dx usually will get the best mileage. its a ton lighter than other models (no power anything, no ac, no moonroof) and auto uses up more hp so it will burn more gas.
Re: Poor Highway mileage - may dump Civic
Au contraire, mon frere. I got the Special Edition model with air conditioning, power locks and keyless entry. I also had my dad and everything I owned in the car moving back out west. The rear suspension sagged so much I couldn't get the tip of my pinky finger between my fender and my tire. I had about 3 millimeters of clearance.

Re: Poor Highway mileage - may dump Civic
dx comes with ac? um no. the VP does. why would honda sell addon a/c kits for $800 if all their models already came with it. ill show you a pic from the brochure and a link to the a/c kit from a honda dealer if you dont believe it. and i never said anything about power steering not being included. every newer car has that. i meant power accessories like doors/mirrors/locks/windows/roof. which dx has none of.
dex your special edition "dx" if thats what they call it in canada is like a vp in the states. a real DX will not have anything you mentioned. i was talking about usa dx. and remember this is a thread in the 7thgen forum so thats the car im referring to.

And to confirm you're right about the air conditioning, I know for sure the DX here in Canada does not come with air conditioning from the factory. It's only an add on or it's in the Special Edition models sold as SE.
