Aftermarket Paint???

I had my new wing painted along with my OEM side mirrors. My question is, the paint feels sort of rough, some spots have little tiny bumps and stuff. Almost like a paint flake isn't level or something. One mirror has a piece of like fiber stuck on it. Is this normal, or should the paint be smooth as glass? any help appretiated!

This wasn't the only problem either, when they removed my mirrors, they forgot to put the rubber seal back in! I noticed this immediately due to the amount of wind noise I was hearing. Anyway, I called them and set up an appointment for the seals to be put back in and for them to smooth out the paint. They did both, so it's all good now. Well, actually not all good, there was a bug that got into the clearcoat of the wing somehow, and theres still a tiny bit of it left. Other than that though, they must have wetsanded it because all the rest of the paint is smooth. I guess they would have just left it if I didn't call though, thats not cool.

solar- do you know of any good local shops? I am getting a bodykit sometime in the next few months, so I'd like to find a place that will do a good job, not just half-assed.

Thanks for your help ohmysac & solar, appretiate the input!

Where the hell did they paint it, outside?! It's probably due to the amount of air pressure they use causing the roughness, and they should be able to wetsand and buff most of it out, just be careful they don't cut through the clear trying to fix it.

lol, yeah I know, I was wondering the same thing...aren't bodyshops supposed to have like a room specifically for painting? A friend told me that they should have a room or a box that is vaccuum sealed or something so this type of crap doesn't happen. Since they couldn't remove the bug completely (its hard to notice though), should I tell them to give me a discount or something?

It's called a paint booth, and if it's properly cleaned then the amount of trash in a paint job is kept to a bare minimum. If they can't get the bug out without cutting through the clear, I'd make them give me my money back or paint it all over again for free. Unfortunately there are as many backyard painters as there are shade tree mechanics; without the right tools you're going to have shitty work.

Well, I am glad you told me. Because this is no backyard paint shop, they're a large local autobody shop, two large buildings with 2 garages and they've been around for like 15 years. Gotta call them now! I guess I'll call them up and tell them the work on the wing is unacceptable...I think I will just drop it off to them though, don't want them to overspray and I don't want to have the car in the shop again. Thanks again for the info!

Dammit! I am getting pissed now, I was washing my car earlier, and now I notice there is some rust on the back bumper, like little tiny dots. It's freaking tiny pieces of metal from the trunk when they drilled for the wing, and now I notice it's also on some of the sides of the car!!! This sucks!! I tried washing it off with a sponge, but it isn't coming off easily. I said forget it and will call them monday morning. I hope it didn't sink into my clearcoat. What the hell should I do??? I don't want them to screw up my car any more than they already have! Please reply with some suggestions on how to rectify this! Thank you

Re: Aftermarket Paint???

They should have recommended to you that you don't wash/wax the car for 30 days as that may embed the paint with wax along and the particles attached on the surface. I was told that when I recently had my Frontier repaired.

The mirrors probably weren't prepped properly and that's the most important part of painting. If you see another EM2, feel the mirrors and door handles, they are completely smooth. The DX models, like I have are unpainted and it has bumps. Tell me how the paint looks now as I'm looking to get my door handles, mirror, and the thing above the license plate thing painted to match the car.

Anyways, I'm curious as of what happened with that situation?

Re: Aftermarket Paint???

I believe they told me about an additional $200 to paint both mirrors, door handles, and deck lid but that's on top of the repairs being done so they said they cut me a deal. I went to about 15 shops and they all said the same thing though, they couldn't warranty the paint on the above parts. They said the paint could peel in a day or in 3 years so you're taking a chance.

I would just suggest getting an estimate from a few places (not maaco) as they would be able to tell you in a few minutes.
