Gas Mileage Sucks, part II
Hey guys, Jason again. Just coming back to whine about my gas mileage. '02 LX Auto.
11/30/02, 314.4 miles w/ 11.4 gal = 27.58mpg
12/16, 316.8m / 11.26g = 28.13mpg
12/20, *Changed oil for first time @ 3,400 miles on 12/20*
12/22, 292.5m / 11.5g = 25.43mpg
12/30, 295.4m / 10.7g = 27.61mpg
01/05, 287.8m / 10.93g = 26.33mpg
01/13, 284.2m / 10.84g = 26.22mpg
01/21, 247.5m / 11.1g = 22.3mpg
That's right. I filled up my tank tonight... 22.3mpg on the last load. That is rediculous. My car has about 4,750 mi now and I am awaiting good gas mileage.

How much city and how much hwy do you do? Hard accelerations or grandma style?
Your car is still pretty new, so give it a few more months. Mileage usually gets better after the 1st and 2nd oil changes.

A automatic transmission will get less milage than a manual transmission, I'm sure you now this, but just for the sake of argument. I've always averaged 32 MPG since I bought my car. I drive mostly city and with the A/C on constantly from May to October, I almost never take the engine over 4000 RPM, and I have a 5 speed. If you don't do jack rabbit starts on a green light and don't race it or drive the RPMs high, I'd say you have a problem. I'd take the info you've posted here to the dealer and show them your milage results.
I bought my car new a little over a year ago and have never had a problem with fuel milage.
If you buy your gas from the same place all the time, maybe thier meters are off, but most people don't buy from the same place. There was a station here in Tampa that was popped for illegal meters, which meant the owners got more money per gallon than what was posted, and the amount on the meter wasn't what was in the tank.

i was going to say put some fuel injector cleaner in your tank, but after seeing how little miles you have on your car, i dont think that's the problem... cause i've been getting less than 250 miles on a full tank... and i just put fuel injector cleaner in and it works great! but then again... my car has over 24000 miles on it... it's a 2001 civic si (ex)

I drive grandma-style, about 50/50 highway/city.... some hills (I live in Kentucky). The heater has been on everytime I drive because, well, it's mid-January. I drive grandma style, car shifts anywhere from 2-3k, only seen 4k+ on a few occasions with a short highway merge. I've come close to redline once in the 4800 miles just because you need to open it up every once in a while to keep a healthy engine.
Hell, we all see those boxy 10-15 year old Honda's/Mazdas/Toyotas/Nissans with 200k+ miles and they seem to be revving extremely high every time I see them. And unfortunately in my area those are the people who love to race. Anytime I'm at a redlight some idiot has to pull up revving in an 85 Corrolla wanting some action. I don't know how the hell I got on that subject... but anyway, yeah, I drive grandma style and 22mpg is pure **** to me.... I considered getting a Golf/Jetta TDI (diesel) instead of my Civic but I've heard a lot of negative dependibility issues, despite their high value holding. Not just the diesel, VW in general seems to not be as reliable as I thought, and repairs are pricey.

I've always been very disappointed in my gas mileage, too. I have a 2K1 EX Automatic with about 13,000 miles on it. I drive granny style but make lots of very short trips. I've changed the oil twice. My last three tanks of gas (all in-town driving) averaged 24.9 MPG; the first five tanks when I bought the car averaged 23.4 MPG. So it did get better after awhile--but not by much. The most I've ever gotten on the highway was 35.2 MPG.
my car is relatively brand new(02 SiG/USA EX coupe) and so far, the furthest i've been able to go on one tank is a little under 500km(this is what i calculated since you can't really empty the tank 100%..there were under 5L left)
500km is what i was able to get when i did a ton of highway driving....
if i do only city driving, i get around 11.7L/100km.....the car is rated around 9L/100km city driving...
yeah, it's an auto and it's still really new...i also have 4 snow tires...
anyways, 11.7L/100km kinda sucks...on my first 02 civic(LX model), i got close to 500km on each tank when i did 100% city driving...that first civic had only 800km on the odometer too...

I drive more hwy than local.
I get around 10.6 L/100km to 11~ L/100km
I drive granny-style...hardly any over 130...
Sucks...And worse thing is that the gas guage is super off!!
I think the best I got was 470 Km...
I thought civics were supposed to be gas misers...
Jason:
I drive to Cincinnati from Indy every other weekend to see my kids. I drive a 2001 EX sedan. In the winter I get about 27-30 mpg city and 31-33 mpg highway. I just went over 36,000 miles. I have a couple of comments:
Check your tire pressure. Especially now when it's cold out, the tire pressure drops about 1 psi for every 10 degree drop in temp. Try keeping the pressure at 32 lbs instead of the 30 recommended. This is my 4th Civic and I have always kept my tires at 2 psi over the recommended. I haven't noticed significant tire wear at these pressures. I got rid of my stock Firestones at 31K because I was losing traction in the rain. They had about half the tread life left.
Is your car stored outside? At lower temperatures the car will use more gas (it needs a richer mixture at cold temperatures).
Hang in there.
Mike

In response to the question as to whether or not the car will get better after the first (maybe even second, but that's pushing it) oil change, I can tell you that things will not improve. I have an '02 EX Auto, and have had it for almost 14 months now, and have consistently been getting 24 mpg if I'm lucky in the city. I have a wee bit under 11,000 miles. I hardly ever, ever use the A/C, I am a fairly sane driver...I am motivated, but I'm not a ricer. And yet, i still get crappy mileage. Still, Ipeople flog the heck out of their Civics and still post better mileage than I do.
When I went to my dealer, the service tech told me that 15-25 was normal range for in-city driving, depending on driving style. Hmm...
This makes me wish I would have gotten a stick shift even more...blast.

Thanks for the tips/advice fellas. I'm about to fillup in another day or so again.
This is how I track my mileage: Started with a full tank, set my odometer A to 0.0, drive until the gas mileage indicator comes on, then fill up...
So, if I used 11 gallons to go xxx.x amount of miles, it's accurate mpg. I've tracked each tank that way.

Actually, in the city, the EX coupe (or Canadian Si) is rated around 7.7 L/100 km. So ya, 11.7 is pretty bad. But don't do your calculations based on a full tank. To get really accurate mileage, you should fill up, set your trip to 0, drive until near Empty, then fill up again at the same pump if possible, then do your calculations, based on what you just filled up with, and your trip meter reading.[hr]

i base my calculations on the pump and the tripmeter...
anyways, even if my calculations were a little off and it was really 10L/100km, my gas milage still reallly sucks...
btw, just fyi, i live in vancouver and we have hills here and there..(not as extreme as san francisco but our roads are not flat 100% of the time)
i also drive w/ the headlights on if raining
i have 4 snow tires on too...all my tires are inflated to 30psi and i check them regularly....i'm not going to bother overinflating since it doesn't get too cold here...
ever since i got the SiG, i've been driving like a granny...i don't usually go more than 60km/h in the city...i've had one nasty accident take my first civic away and i do not want my new civic to get banged up....i no longer drive like i stole it..heh

In some states they will oxygenate the fuel (that's what it's called anyway) this is done during the winter months to reduce vehicle emmisions for some reason, anyway, with oxgenated fuel you will get poorer gas mileage, so this could be part of the problem, I know around here (Seattle) they do it. Another thing is how many occupants you have in the car as well as how much extra weight you have in there for whatever reason (dead prostitues in the trunk...the trunk is roomy...) I notice that If i drive around with my car fully loaded w/ 3 people, my MPG suffers noticably, ALSO, if you push the pedal to the floor without it even reving into higher rpms, you will use more fuel. All of these are viable reasons why your gas milage suffers. BTW, my HX is averaging 33 MPG, and it has 2700 miles on it at this moment. Hope this helps.

95% of the time, i don't have any passengers in my car...

My average for the past 6 months is 10.4L/100kms or 9.6km/L.
I got the same mileage as turboslug once ie 11.7L/100kms or 8.5km/L.
The best I got out of a tank was 400km.
I drive 100% intown. Most of the time solo and the a/c is always on. Most of my trips are short, seldom exceed 10km. The auto box goes through alot of gear changes. RPM usually yo-yo between 2k to 4k. The needle seldom kiss the red zone.
Everybody is complaining. But what's the solution?
I drive a 02 Civic VTi(1.7L sohc vtec, auto). I don't know its equivalent in Canada or US.

i don't redline or even hit 4k rpm very often...i usually drive under 3000rpm
I've been getting around 25 - 26 mpg city, and around 29-30 mixed highway/city although my last reading seemed to be around 23 mpg city but I am hoping I may have miscalculated the amount of gas, but I have 120 on my trip odometer so far and I've used an estimated 5 gallons based on the gas gauge. That's 24 mpg or thereabouts. I haven't done an accurate fill up test in awhile though, I've been estimating what it will take to get $10 worth the F line. 5 gallons seems to be from the F line to a little below the half mark. $10 was getting me around 6.5 gallons, 7 gallons seems to be from the full line to around 3/8 full. I'll be doing some highway driving in the near future so I'll be able to do the calculation for almost all highway, I'll do the true calculation by filling up, but so far I've never achieved the 30 mpg city estimate.
Hmmm... seems the best way, and the way i do it incidently, is to just keep a log of the miles racked up between gas fillups (the odometer comes in handy for this not surprisingly) and divide that by the exact amount you fill up at the pump. I've kept a record of every time I filled up and it has usually been about 27 mpg with mostly city, fairly hard driving. The lowest was around 25 and the highest around 31. Not impressive to say the least.
I'm pretty disappointed with my civic's gas mileage too! i wonder though how much of a difference having a system in your trunk makes a difference with the gas mileage? Just wondered? I know my gas mileage sucks , I think I'm gonna have to start a log just like manofsteel and maybe take it back to the dealership before my warranty expires!!!

Yeah guys. I have the same problem. Before I kept track of my miles per gallon. It was great averaging above 40mpg. Just a few days ago. I started it again. SH^T man I got 33mpg. I was so p!ss. I am going to keep track of it. Keep the receipts, everything. I will drive without the a/c and heater for awhile. So good luck guys. Let me know if your dealer does anything about it and if its covered under warranty. Also, does the weather affect the millage. I am over at Michigan. Well, laters.
Mileage update:
Miles driven 173 Gas consumed 6.25 gal. (appox.) Mileage = 27.68 mpg.
Further analysis:
About 40 miles were highway, but on/off highway every 10 miles or so. The remaining 133 were mainly city. I would say my driving style is moderate, but for this mileage check I was trying to go easy on acceleration from a stopped position, etc.
Assuming I got 35 mpg for the 40 miles of highway, that would be 1.1429 gallons of gas used leaving 5.1071 gallons for the 133 miles of city driving. That comes out to 26.04 mpg for the city portion.
It's been really cold too, so I guess these results were reasonable. Not up to Honda's claims, but acceptable, at least to me.

I dunno how you guys get such low gas mileage... I got my EX coupe 5spd and I'm getting 27-30 in the winter. I always let my car warm up to atleast 1k rpm and usually until the guages gets to C. I always got the radio going but the AC is almost never on (even in the winter). In the summer time, I get 31+ mpg. I usually even get up to the 33 area. I live in a pretty rural part of Tennessee and nearly all my driving is city. I'd say 95/5 city/highway in the winter. It's pretty much 100% city in the summer. When I drive, I shift below 3k, usually around 2.5k. I enjoy running up the RPMs every once in a while too. I really don't know why you'd be getting below 25 rpms ever if you're driving it decently. I guess check your tire pressure and idle speed. Or, maybe you're gas station is ripping you off...

does anyone know if honda will do anything about this poor mileage thing? hey, we paid for this honda technology. they say our cars can do this and that, but its not doing all that. is honda lying to us. whats up with that. i bought a car that will go over 40mpg on a highway and i expect it to go over 40mpg on the highway. any comments.
