Grinding Gears
I let a friend of mine drive my car today and let him take it up to around 4-5k RPM...he grind my second gear going from first to second at around 5000RPM...how bad is it for the car? Cause i feel bad for my car.

Don't worry about it... it can happen on accident sometimes as long as it doesn't happen too much... if it happens once in a while it's ok. To prevent this from happening, he should probably scoot his seat up a lil' closer so his foot can engage on the clutch more.
you know, i have the same problem sometimes. dont get me wrong, i know how to drive stick, but the actual stick doesnt fully click into the gear. its really annoying me. 1st to 2nd is where it happens most. occasionally 2nd to 3rd. and its not like im not reaching the clutch pedal, this just happens randomly and im worried that im tearing the $hit out of my gears. any suggestions? anyone else have this problem?? A lot of people have noticed that shifting from 1st to 2nd isn't smooth. i don't get it... but I learned that if the gears grind too much it'll gradually be harder and harder to shift.... and somehow that faded away. I tried taking the problem to the dealer and failed to prove the problem after they let me test drive a brand new 2002 EX coupe.
But shifting from 2nd to 3rd, I have had problems with that at a time... I just think that I'm trying to shift too fast to 3rd.
In fact when I first got my car... I tried shifting the gears and that grinding noise was the first sound it made after turning on the engine. When you grind from 2nd to 3rd, it doesn't sound like it's grinding, it sounds like it's drilling. Just be more careful shifting!

Looks like this problem did not skip a generation...my 6th gen does the same thing, especially when I'm shifting hard - I've heard the same thing from other Civic owners and it seems to just be one of those kinks that Honda didn't work out...it's just not a smooth transition all the time...

I know my problem when I first learned stick was that I wouldn't push the clutch in all the way. I would push it in about half way. I grinded a few times but only occasionally now that I know how to drive stick.
You can make alot of this better with the Revo Short Shift kit, or at least the aluminum bushings. They will make the stick feel more solid in gear so that you are sure it is fully in. Another thing to watch for is how you shift gears. I use a light touch and guide it in while allowing the synchros enough time to do what they must. If you go ramming it from gear to gear it might pop out or not lock fully engaged.
1st to 2nd seems to be the most problematic shift on a lot of cars ...... not just on our Civics. I've read many other people talking about this same 1st to 2nd grind on VW Vortex and Protege forums.
Right now for me, upshifting from 1st to 2nd is starting to feel notchy and loose if I do it fast... but there is no grinding. Every other gear is still very good.
And ya, I find that if I do what DxMan says, shifting a bit more slowly from 1st to 2nd, the feeling is a lot smoother.
Downshifting to 2nd from any higher gear has never been a problem though, and is still very smooth.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't VW's gears more pronounced? Someone told me that if you learn stick on a VW, you can drive any manual - something about the gears being tight and the clutch being rigid...
I've never driven a VW, but I think what you said applies to some of their older models. Their newer models may have easier manual trannies now.
But I do know that Honda has some of the smoothest and easiest manual transmissions in the car industry.

Ah, gotcha...yeah, I was referring to the older VW's - I almost got one, but there were too many problems and it was just too expensive for me to maintain...and so, my love affair with Honda begins...

Okay now I will say that now I don't feel so bad, because I have grinded 2nd gear a couple of times, its the worst sound ever!! I've noticed though that its caused from not fully depressing the clutch, even though I've shifted smoothy into 2nd gear many times without fully depressing the clutch, I think it has to do with the speed and RPM's your at when shifting.

Okay folks, let me help. I've noticed that I've been grinding into second when upshifting and downshifting, and it actually pops out of second and grinds quite frequuently. This is a common problem and there is a recall on it, it is a problem with the bushings, fixed under warranty of course.

i think sometimes i grind the gears because when im going from 2nd to 3rd you dont really put it in the exact right spot for 3rd gear it could be off by just a little and still the car yells at you...Imo
It is actually a silent recall on the bushings and synchros...My 2001 Dx coupe grinds slightly when downshifting into third and second. Hower, my Honda dealership told me that they would overhaul me tranny (replace a bunch of parts that I have never heard of) and replace all of the synchros eventhough the problem only occurs in 2nd and 3rd. I guess they like waranty work!!! The only problem is that most dealerships in Canada are so backed up that it takes aprox. 2 months to get all of the parts in stock.

I grinded mine twice. once into second but my foot slipped off the clutch befor it was completed and once when I was downshifting into first gear dont understand that one and the lever kicked back really damn hard

just dropped my car off at the dealer today the mechanic suspected a bad syncro after a test drive and it looks like a rebuild on my tranny is in the near future. They told me today that last week Honda of america was by and told them that free rental cars was not hondas responsibility and that to get one the dealer needed to get some special approval. I will be extremely upset if they don't get me one if this job takes longer than a few days...and I think it will...I'll post again with more news
