broken cylinder head bolt

broken cylinder head bolt

installed the head on my 04 civic used new head bolts snugged them all up in sequence as per manual but final torque the number one bolt broke off in the block torque stated 168 ft. pounds the other nine are fine looking for suggestions if anyone has encountered this I'm not real keen on drilling it out thanks

WHOA! That spec is waaaay wrong. (and I'd like to know how you came up with that number)


No wonder it broke...the rest of them should have broken along with the first one.

Um.. Yeah.. 14 ft-lbs for the first round.. 36 for the second, 49 for the final round.. You applied >3x the required torque to those head studs.

Surprised you didn't strip block threads over-torquing that much. Back all the other ones out to correct final torque spec or they will rip threads when the engine heats up. Refer to this and manual for torque specs and sequence: https://www.justanswer.com/honda/294...l-non-cyl.html

i really need to proof read my posts trying to type fast with fingers like sausage i torqued the head bolts the proper sequence three times but still one bolt did snap took it all apart only damage was broken stud drilled it out and used a flute extractor and all is well its all back together will finish up today new timing belt water pump and tensioner cant imagine i am the only one to ever break a head bolt
