wont start

hey guys new here,
my sons 2002 civic 1.7 stalled on him couple weeks ago at a stop light and wouldnt start back up. had the car towed and mobile mechanic come look at it and he said timing belt. so we had timing belt replaced along with waterpump crank and cam sensors tens, pully. after all that car still wouldnt start so took it to a shop they double check timing and it was fine also checked injectors and compression and spark and it all checked out ok. so they dropped the catalytic converter and the damn car started right up..... so my question is will a clogged Cat cause a car not to start at all?

If it is clogged bad enough that air cannot flow, then yes.
If they do not find and fix the root cause of the cat failure, it will be doomed to repeat the event.

Did the timing belt failure cause it? Hard to say.
Was the timing belt a problem in the first place? Hard to say.

I assume it had been running poorly for a while before it quit running?
Check engine light had been on or flashing for a long time?

Last check engine light was Cam positioning sensor. son only drives 2 miles to and from school and speed limit is 35mph from home to school so cant really tell if the car was driving abnormal or not. every now and then the car would idle rough in the mornings thats it. i did notice the car getting extremely hot for such short distance so i wonder if the excessive heat was coming from the Cat being plugged. we bought the car 7 months ago had 160k on the dash and drove fine till this happened.

If the engine runs bad enough, even a brand new cat can be absolutely ruined in less than a minute.
