Transmission D light, smoking

I own a 1998 Ek3 civic that was recently under repairs and haven't been driven for a while. Recently started driving it and the Transmission D light is coming on. After the light comes on, the vehicle stutters while driving and you see smoke a little while after. The engine light doesn't come on tho. I'm so confused. What's happening?

Re: Transmission D light, smoking

Computer has detected a problem: Find out what the fault codes are first.

Hopefully the codes will be in our standard OBD2 format of "Pxxxx"

Follow Ezone's advice and also check ATF fluid on dipstick with car at operating temp, on level ground, engine running. Does smoke smell like ATF fluid burning? Possibly the transmission developed a leak and ATF is leaking onto the exhaust. WHile you're waiting for car to warm up to operating temp place a large piece of cardboard underneath the engine/transmission and inspect for drip stains.

Optimally you'd want to drive the car for around 30 minutes to circulate ATF at operating temp before checking the ATF level. However, in your car's case it's probably best to let engine get to operating temp and then with your foot on the brake shift it through every gear a few times including reverse. Of course pause through each gear before shifting to prevent damage.
