2001 Civic noise and shaking
2001 Civic noise and shaking
On my 01 civic i just purchased they told me there was a noise that they had checked out and the garage couldn't find anything wrong I just checked the bearing which is what i thought it was going to be but those are good along with everything else in there.
On the passenger side front tire If i hit a bump I get this bad noise and shaking for a moment to a few seconds then everything returns to normal. Anyone know what this could be if its not bearings, brakes, or tie rods?

Re: 2001 Civic noise and shaking
After looking at it again I do see one of the rubber bushings on the lower control arm toward the front of the car is torn a bit. You think that would be the cause? Do I have to align the front end after replacing those?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: 2001 Civic noise and shaking
its common for them to break on these cars, the bushing can be replaced by itself provided you have the proper tools, either a press, or one of those balljoint c-clamp press tools (you can usually rent them for free from parts stores).
or just swap in new control arms.
or put poly bushing inserts in if you want to be fancy
make sure its the actual cause before you go replacing parts though

After getting the control arm out I also found that the sway bar link was very loose, the joint was flopping it was so loose as well as where it goes through the sway bar was moving back and forth freely. I couldn't get it to come out with wrenches so I ended up having to cut it out.
Re: 2001 Civic noise and shaking
I was going to suggest a bad strut in the front passenger side if you were having excessive bouncing after a pothole of bump in the road. Should be replaced in pairs though - hopefully this doesn't get too expensive for you...
Re: 2001 Civic noise and shaking
I think it's fixed with the bushings "I couldn't get the bushings to press in so I ended up just buying the whole control arm" and sway bar link, I didn't drive it too far yet so I'll be more confident that it's fixed once I drive some more, but so far so good no nasty noises or shaking.
Re: 2001 Civic noise and shaking
It's still doing it but less often and not as bad or long.
I think the best way to describe it is it sounds like going over a rumble strip not at full speed, usually happens around 30-40mph going straight but putting pressure on the steering to go left because it is trying to pull right a little which it does intermittently as well. When it shakes the steering wheel will jerk a little to the right side and that side of the car feels like its trying to slow down.
After driving a bit more I'm starting to figure out the symptoms a bit more. Replacing those bad parts did help things but it wasn't the root cause. Everything feels tight which is what is puzzling me.
