I have started the timing belt replacement repair
and have gotten to the point where I needed to remove
the crank pulley with the special Honda tool.
So I got the tool, then go to use it and notice on my 2004
civic ex coup that the crank pulley does not have the hex
in it?
Did I miss something here or am I dealing with someone that
had previously put a different crank pulley on this car?
Does the 04 civic need this tool to get the crank pulley off?
Any help is appreciated.

looks like its a bolt now.. non honda crank pulley , none oem style to me..

Aftermarket pulley.
Clearly a case of "Bone the next guy".

On the plus side, seeing as how there is no provision for holding that pulley for tightening the bolt, the bolt probably isn't as tight as the factory installed it. Someone probably installed it with an impact gun at best, so a decent air impact gun should be able to remove it.

In the shop I'd use my 1/2" Ingersoll impact gun, with the extra heavy "power socket".
Works wonders.

How to hold the thing still so the bolt can be removed by hand......Chain wrench? Strap wrench? Remove starter (or bellhousing inspection covers) and jam the blade of a pry bar (wedge) between a ring gear tooth and the bellhousing?

Destroy the pulley if you have to.....replace it with a stock unit.
Aftermarket power pulley may be a smaller diameter than the stock unit...so you may need a set of stock belts too.

i would try one of these before buying an impact, most parts stores will loan them for free, unless the extra cash is not an issue for you,

one of those should do the job easily with a good sized breaker bar, i slide a 6 foot steel pipe over my breaker bar and stand on it if i have to, never failed me,

thats what i was about to say, its most likely an under-drive pulley, smaller then stock size and lighter, it turns the pulleys slower then the stock pulley would, had them on a mustang i had until it annoyed me too much having my headlights go dim at idle all the time,
