Ridiculous Overheating Issue
Ridiculous Overheating Issue
I have read and studied and watched countless videos trying to pinpoint the issue of my 2002 Honda Civic EX overheating. I broke down 300 miles away from home and had to be towed all the way back. I have changed the water pump, radiator, coil packs, spark plugs, head gasket, timing belt, AC compressor, intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, Vtec Solenoid gasket, valve cover gasket, all 4 gaskets where the coil packs go. I have cleaned everything and been maticulous, 8 changed the oil and flushed all the coolant twice and my car over heats within a minute or two just idling. It maxes out the heat gauge and the coolant gets extremely hot. Before my car completely shut itself off going 70 down the highway it blew off a coolant cap. Then I replaced it. Again and again. It blew off coolant caps and hoses. I took the head to a machine shop and it had no cracks it was slightly warped but they fixed it. I don't know why my car is overheating and I don't have money to pay a mechanic to guess what's wrong with it. The fans aren't kicking on when I turn on the AC and I just replaced the compressor. Please help. Thanks.

When was the last valve lash adjustment performed?
Re: Ridiculous Overheating Issue
Overheating that quickly points to a failed thermostat. However, if you changed all that other stuff I assume the thermostat has been replaced though you didn't mention it. Another possibility is a clogged radiator.

Re: Ridiculous Overheating Issue
I haven't had/done one the entire time I've had the car and I don't know if the previous owner has either. It has a new thermostat in it forgot to add that. I recently took the head to a machine shop and they said something about them having to loosen something to move the camshaft and get the valves out of the way. When I tugged on a few of them. Some were tight and some had a little rattle to them. I made sure the car was completely bled and full of coolant also.
Is it an OEM thermostat?
Call the machine shop and ask if they adjusted the valves.

"If lash is reduced beyond a reasonable amount, several things occur, all of them unpleasant. First, the valve timing is changed slightly, and this may affect performance, and emission outputs. But there is an added complication: The exhaust valve stays alive because it's able to transfer a fair portion of the heat it absorbs from the combustion process directly into the cylinder head when it's resting on its seat. As clearance is reduced, the valves spend less time on their seats. This means the exhaust valve(s) has less time to give up its heat, leading to anything from detonation, pre-ignition and engine overheating, to a warped or burnt valve."

Re: Ridiculous Overheating Issue
Even if the head gasket job was done perfectly, a single overheat event can ruin all that work in a heartbeat.....so you could still be fighting multiple issues.
